Apple has launched the translation game on iOS 14 with natural translation from the Safari browser and a dedicated translation app. Now, on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, translation is widely available on the system, meaning you can enjoy the convenience of Apple’s new Live Text feature to translate other languages that will be displayed in your photos.
Translate text using iPhone camera
- To translate the text, open up The Camera app on your iPhone or iPad.
- I just opened an image on my computer for demonstration purposes. I will point my iPhone camera to the image and scan it with my iPhone. As you can see, in the image below, it’s something written in Japanese and I’ll try to translate it into English. as i pointed my camera for that image, it instantly detects the text and starts showing yellow square brackets around it and also shows an icon that informs you that some text has been detected. If the Camera is not autofocused on the target text, so you can tap the screen to focus it manually. Tap the text indicator icon to see different options, including translate.
- Tap the Translate option to translate the full text in the image, it will automatically detect the language and translate it to English by default. You can later choose another language if you want to translate it to a language other than English.
- As you can see below, it automatically detects Japanese language and translates to English (US). You can tap the Play icon that is available in front of each language to hear the pronunciation.
- Here, you can also change the language by selecting the Change language option.
- On the next screen, you can change the original or translation language very easily.

Translate text from existing photos

Translate text offline using an iPhone camera
