How to turn off Chat History on Microsoft Teams – Guide

The default hold for Teams chat conversations is forever. However, you can change this by creating a new retention area. To set up a retention area, you must be the global admin of your group or have the permissions assigned to you by the global admin.

How to Disable chat history in Microsoft Teams

Open the Microsoft Teams app.

In the left menu, click on the Team you want to disable chat.

Click the More Options menu in the top right corner of the Teams screen. This should be the three dots icon.

From the drop-down menu, choose Manage Channel.

You must be in the Channel Settings window. On the Permissions tab, click Only owners can post messages.

Navigate out of this window.

With this setting, only team members who have been designated as owners can use the chat. If you want to change a member’s assignment, do the following:

Click on the team name in the left menu.

Click the More Options icon just to the right of the team name. This will be the three dots icon, then click on Manage Team.

In the window that appears, make sure you are on the Members tab. Tab names are listed at the top of the menu.

In the list of team members, click the drop-down arrow at the far right of each member’s box. Change the designation from Member to Owner. That person will now be able to chat.

The opposite is also true. Changing a former owner to a member will disable their ability to use chat on the team page.

You can also access more detailed chat policy setting through the Microsoft Teams admin center. to open this feature, you need a Microsoft account for work or school. Also, your account must be marked as a global admin, otherwise you won’t be able to make changes to your Teams settings. If you have an admin account and want to change your chat settings, follow these steps:

Open the Microsoft admin center page.

In the menu on the left, you will see all available settings. Click Messaging Policies.

Click Add to create a new Messaging Policy.

Name the new policy. It would be better to give it a descriptive name so you can easily assign it later.

You will see a set of toggles that will allow you to choose specific settings for this policy. Since you want to remove chat, find the chat toggle and disable it.

When you’re done choosing settings, click Save.

Now that you have a messaging policy that prevents users from using chat feature, all you need to do is assign members to this policy. To do this, follow the instructions below:

In the Microsoft Teams admin center page window, click the Messaging Policies option in the left menu.

Click on your newly created policy.

In the menu just above the policies, click Manage Users.

A pop-up window will appear.up which allows you to choose the users who will follow this messaging policy. Enter a member’s name and click Add.

Click Apply. Users who are part of this messaging policy will now be blocked from using chat.

If you have many members and it is inconvenient to add them one by one, you can also assign the notification policy in the Users menu. To do this:

In the left menu of the Microsoft Teams admin center page, click Users.

You will see a list of all users on the team. You can select all of them or use filters using the funnel icon in the top right corner to select specific members.

After selecting the users to be barred from the chat, click Edit Settings. The icon should be in the top left corner of the member list.

In the Message policy drop-down box, choose the policy you created.

Click Apply to save all your changes.

All members who have been assigned to the policy will now be blocked from using chat.
