How to Undervolt Laptop via Intel XTU – Guide

What does “undervolting” mean? Undervolting means to reduce the voltage that a component receives. Why is it important? By lowering the voltage, even in relatively small amounts, the power consumption of the components (in this case the CPU) is reduced, thus reducing heat generation and prolonging battery life. What’s the catch? In fact, the risk is low or non-existent. The worst thing that can happen is the computer will crash if you reduce the voltage too much, and you will have to reduce the undervoltage (that is, return a little more voltage).

Although I have never heard of a computer being damaged by software undervoltage, please be advised that we are in no way responsible for any strange acts of God or transdimensional underwater creatures that could damage your computer if you do so. Undervolt CPU using Intel’s Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU)

Download the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU) and install it.

Open Intel XTU, a welcome screen will appear and a screen will show details about your hardware, including processor, memory, motherboard, etc.

Enable the core voltage monitoring system in the system monitoring section. To enable it, click on the wrench in the lower right corner.

Now scroll down and check the box to enable core voltage, now a new core voltage monitor will appear in the home screen.

Exit system monitoring screen setup and return to home. Now, just remember the standard voltage without Undervolting.

Click on the Advanced Fit option from the list available on the left side of the screen.

Mouse over the core voltage offset and reduce it to small voltages of 0.020V and apply.

Once it reaches -0.001V and your system is operating stably, run the CPU stress test to check for problems.

Lower the voltage by 0.005V until the system locks up or starts to malfunction.

After setting your device to the least stable voltage, you will have successfully Undervolted your CPU.

After Undervolting your system, you will notice some drastic changes in battery life performance, less fan noise and will eliminate overheating.
