How to use Watch Window in Excel – Guide

There are often some cells in our spreadsheet where we have significant revenue. In addition, these formulas help us to calculate some critical qualities. Experiencing the same thing, it’s really critical to keep an eye on these cells, whether the calculation is right or there’s no error. However, the fact is, the more you have these type of cells, the more you want to invest your amount of energy and time into following them. In Excel, there is an option called watch window which was introduced by Microsoft in version 2013 and tends to be your go-to tool when you know how valuable it is.

Using Excel’s Watch Window

Using the Watch Window, you can extract important cells into a separate window and track them there, which saves you from having to scroll through the entire worksheet.

  • Let’s take a look at the example below. Let’s say this data is part of a much larger dataset and we want to monitor some important cells that change quite often.
  • Click the Formulas tab on the Ribbon and locate the button titled Watch Window in the Formula Audit section.
  • this will open up the Watch Window dialog box. The box is, of course, empty as we haven’t added any cells to monitor yet. Now let’s add a cell to the observation window. To do this, click on the Add Watch link located at the top of the dialog box.
  • In the Add Watch dialog, you can choose cells in two ways. You can type the cell reference directly or select cells with the mouse. Entering cells directly is useful when you only have one or two cells that you want to monitor.
  • You are not limited to selecting just one or a few cells at a time. You can add contiguous cells to the Watch Window by clicking and dragging the mouse to select a series of cells. When finished, click on the Add button button.
  • You will notice a few things after you add the cell(s) to the Watch Window. First, Excel started tracking cells. Any changes to the value or formula of that cell will be displayed immediately up in the observation window.
  • Second, the Watch Window also reports other important information about the cells, including the workbook and worksheet the cells reside in, and the cell name, if you’ve given it one.
  • If you prefer, you can even drag the Watch Window to one side of Excel to dock it so it doesn’t take too long. up valuable space on the worksheet floating around.
  • You can add cells from other worksheets in the same Excel workbook, but you cannot add cells from another workbook. Each workbook has its own separate Watch Window.
