How to Borrow iCloud Storage for Free to Transfer Data to Your New iPhone – Guide
You can get a temporary iCloud backup that can be deleted in 21 days.
Are you switching from an old iPhone to a new one? The online backup process is generally smooth, as long as you have enough free space on iCloud or on a computer to use iTunes for backup and restore. However, if you don’t have enough storage on iCloud, you won’t need to use your computer anymore.
You can now temporarily borrow Apple’s iCloud storage to complete an online backup and restore it to your new iPhone. Apple allows you to borrow this iCloud storage at no charge, but the problem is that your data will only remain on iCloud for 21 days. (If you are unable to restore your iCloud backup within 21 days, please contact Apple Support and request to extend your iCloud temporary storage for another 21 days, but I hope this is not a concern if you are only transferring data .)
It’s an easy way to get back up and restore your iPhone online without spending a dime. Here it is how to define it up.
How to get temporary iCloud storage for free
Before you begin, please update your iPhone or iPad to iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 first. You cannot access this temporary iCloud storage on previous versions of iOS or iPadOS. After updating, remember to remember your Apple ID and password, because without them you won’t be able to access your iCloud account.
With basic care, create a temporary backup of your iPhone or iPad by going to Settings > General and scrolling to the bottom. Tap Download or Reset iPhone.
At the top of this page, you will see a box titled: Prepare for New iPhone. Tap Getting Started to start the process.
If you don’t use iCloud backups, you might see a message stating that iCloud backup is disabled. Tap Enable backup to transfer to enable iCloud backups. You cannot continue without activating it.
That’s when you’ll see a message stating that you’re eligible for free extra storage on iCloud. Tap Continue to start rewinding up your iPhone or iPad to borrowed iCloud storage. It’s important to note that you won’t see this message if you have enough storage space on your iCloud.
Once the backup is complete, you can erase your iPhone or iPad. When your new Apple device arrives, follow the onscreen setup process and, on the Apps & Data screen, tap Restore from iCloud Backup. Your temporary iCloud backup will show up here and you can select it to download all your data on the new iPhone or iPad. Once finished, everything is ready.
After you finish setting up up your new device, Apple says your temporary iCloud backup is permanently deleted within seven days. For most people, this is more than enough time to redo the restoration if something goes wrong.
