A video on TikTok is trending after a cybersecurity expert showed viewers how easy it is for Airbnb hosts and hotels to hide surveillance cameras in their properties without guests knowing.
Spy Catchers LLC, a professional surveillance technical countermeasure company, works with individuals to help track hidden devices such as surveillance cameras.
According to businessman Thomas Ham, work has doubled since the beginning of the pandemic.
As in the TikTok video, Ham says guests staying on an Airbnb or a hotel can easily find any recording device (if any), illuminating a hidden location camera lens.
Experts, including Ham, say that camera the lenses will reflect a blue or red color when hit by light.
Typical areas you should research include devices such as an alarm clock, smoke detector, or shower.
Some experts also suggest downloading the free smartphone app, “Fing”.
“The ‘Fing App’ works if you have the WiFi password for the space you are hosted in. It will log on to that network and will actually provide a list of all devices currently listed on that network. It tries to give you an idea of what each device is – whether it’s a cell phone IP, cameras, things of that nature,” said Ham.
Ham offered another tip: When entering a rental property for the first time, turn off the WiFi and router.
If you get a call from the host stating that WiFi has been turned off, this might serve as a good option up a conversation about whether there are cameras on the property.
Airbnb has rules in place to protect its guests from any hidden recording devices, which it defines as “any mechanism that can be used to capture or transmit audio, video or still images”.
On its website and app, the company said it requires everyone in the “Airbnb community to respect each other’s privacy,” adding that hosts should reveal security cameras and other recording devices in their listings and avoid adding them to spaces private, such as bathrooms and bedrooms.
Airbnb also lists rules specifically for hosts and guests.
For hosts:
“If you are a host and have some kind of security camera and/or other recording devices in or around a list, even if not turned on or connected up, we ask that you indicate your presence in the Things to Know section in Health and Safety. We also require you to disclose how guests will be monitored and whether an active recording is taking place,” he said. Airbnb added that if a device is disclosed after booking, the guest can cancel the booking and receive a refund.
For guests:
“If you are a guest, our Standards and Expectations require you not to spy on other people or violate other people’s privacy,” said Airbnb. “Our policy prohibits the use of a security title camera or any other recording device by a guest to monitor a host or any third party on the list without that person’s consent. ”
The company says any violation could result in the suspension or removal of the Airbnb community.
