What is Apple Planning for iPhone’s Cameras Around Three Years in Advance – Guide
After the release of the iPhone 13 models, Apple’s vice president camera Graham Townsend of Hardware Engineering and Vice President of camera Software engineer Jon McCormack spoke with British GQ’s Robert Leedham about iPhone cameras.
Townsend revealed that Apple begins planning the iPhone future camera systems about three years before public availability, suggesting that the company began developing the camera systems on iPhone 13 models as early as 2018.
“Planning should start about three years early, because that’s when we actually fix the silicon specs,” says Townsend. “So, for example, the sensor is set at that point and the A15 Bionic processor is also frozen. That’s when we have to start talking to Jon and predicting the experiences we want. Obviously, when we designed the new ultra-wide-angle lens, we were going to deliver macro shots. But how will this work in both photos and video? ”
All four iPhone 13 models feature a new cinematic mode that allows users to record video with a shallow depth of field and automatic shifts of focus between subjects, and McCormack reflected on the challenges of developing this feature.
“It was a long process with a lot of windy roads, but like most things deep, it takes a while,” says McCormack. “We’re not just looking at the depth of each frame, but there’s also something called temporal stability: as we move between frames with people moving, how can we make sure you don’t end up up with weird edges and stuff like that? ”
The interview continues to discuss Apple’s environmental responsibility and emphasizes the extent to which the iPhone camera came over the years.
“We are not asking for the impossible, but we are asking for the camera it achieves the best it can every year,” says Townsend. “Over the last ten years, we’ve seen a dramatic improvement, but there’s no rest.”
Townsend and McCormack also spoke with Jacob Krol of CNN Underscored, talking about the simplicity Apple wants with the iPhone camera:
“Long before you even hit the shutter, just bring the camera up, we’re looking at auto exposure, white balance, auto focus to make sure we get all the right information, the raw information captured,” Jon McCormack, VP of camera Apple’s software engineering tells us.
