Google Sheets does not come with a local technique for inserting special characters. However, these two workarounds can take care of the problem. From copyright symbols to simple checkmarks, special characters and symbols are needed from time to time. As such, you might be shocked to find that Google Sheet Editor doesn’t have a real way to insert a special character or symbol into your menu! Fortunately, there are two workarounds that will help you overcome the hurdles – allowing you to insert a special character or symbol into your Google Spreadsheet and work better in Google Drive.

See how you add them (scroll down to see a tutorial):

  • Open Google Doc
  • Click on Insert in the menu
  • Click on special characters…
  • Use the drop-down menus in the dialog that appears to see all available special characters.
  • Search for a specific one by drawing it in the blank box on the right.
  • Click on the symbol you want to add and it will be added wherever the cursor is in the document.
  • To add emoji, change the Symbol drop-down box to Emoji (see GIF below).
