How to Change DPI in Android Device – Guide

We can directly change the screen resolution on our PC and the text on the screen will change automatically. Likewise, by changing the DPI on Android smartphones, we can adjust the text size and resolution. DPI refers to your device’s pixel density, which is the ratio of your screen resolution to your device’s screen size. Users want to change device DPI for various reasons.

While some OEM manufacturers offer this feature on their devices as part of their Android modifications, the ability to change the DPI is not available on Android ROMs prior to Nougat. You can change the DPI on Android devices after rooting and then change the settings, or the DPI can be changed by accessing some UI tuner permissions with ADB without rooting too. follow our guide here in how to change the DPI of your android device with and without root.

Screen density is a ratio of resolution to screen size that can be quantified as dots per inch, or DPI. The higher the dpi number, the smaller each individual pixel and the brighter. Simply put, a higher dpi means more detail is displayed per inch, but that doesn’t necessarily correlate with a higher screen resolution. Android Nougat added one of these feature which has always been (used to be) of paramount importance for people with small screen devices. Yes, I’m talking about changing the Android screen’s DPI density. Well, it’s not exactly called that, but something like that – “Screen Size”.

If your Android device is running on Nougat or Oreo, you can simply modify the DPI density directly in the device settings.

Go to the app drawer and open Settings.

Scroll down and select “View”.

Now if you scroll down a bit you will notice a “Display Size” setting.

By default, the value is automatically set according to your device’s screen resolution.

You can reduce the size of elements by sliding the slider to the left (Small).

Or you can swipe right from “Default” to “Large”, “Larger” or “Larger”. This will make the elements on the screen larger.

Once you choose the desired setting, you can simply revert the settings and it will be automatically saved.

There is another method that can help you set the DPI density to extremely low or high levels.

To access the setting, you must first enable developer options on your device. Then go to “Settings” > “About phone” and start tapping continuously on the “Build number” until you see the system notification “You are a developer now”.

Now that you’ve enabled developer options, you can access them by going to Settings > Developer Options (Nougat) or Settings > System > Developer Options.

Scroll down the list until you find the “Smallest Width” setting in the “Drawing” section.

You will now see the default DPI value for your device. Write it down somewhere, so you can always restore it.

Edit this value and enter the custom value as per your choice. The higher the value; the smaller the UI elements will be and vice versa.

For my Nexus 6P, the current value is 411 dp. So if I change it to 320 dp the content gets bigger. Whereas if I change it to 484 dp the content is reduced to a smaller size.

Note that the value entered will always change to the closest safe DPI value for your device. So if you open that setting again, don’t be surprised if you see the value a little different than what you entered.

rooted users

In case you don’t have Nougat or Oreo running on your device, you can still modify the DPI density on your rooted device.

Make sure your device is rooted using SuperSU or Magisk.

Next, to change the DPI density on your rooted Android, you will have to edit the build.prop file. Then download BuildProp Editor to help you with that.

Once the app is installed, open it and grant root permissions when prompted.

The application by default opens up the build.prop, then scroll through it until you find “ro.sf.lcd_density” in the “BUILD INFO” section.

Tap it to edit. You can change the default value to anything of your choosing, but just make sure you don’t skew the value extremely to either end.

Finally, tap SAVE and restart your device for the changes to take effect.
