How to Defrag Windows 11 Hard Drives Easily – Guide
Defragmenting your secondary storage has been one of the essential solutions to eliminating performance issues on PCs. Also, even Windows (by default) should automatically defrag your hard drive periodically.
However, many of us still may not have a clue as to what exactly causes a hard drive to fragment, and how to manually check or defrag your hard drives. Well, if you’ve been thinking about these things lately, we’ve covered everything in this article.
Fragmentation basically spreads your data across the entire storage drive on your machine, which is due to regular use of your machine as you install and delete programs or files over time.
To give you more perspective, you can easily find a specific page in the book with page numbers in a linear series; now imagine trying to find a page in a book that has confused up page numbers. This is exactly known as fragmentation because you delete files and program causes several inline storage blocks to be empty, and if a new program or file is not exactly the same empty block size; your system stores it in a new block, making the storage structure consist of several gaps.
Now, since most computers still use HDDs that have a mechanical arm to read a block of data from a physical spinning disk, fragmented storage requires much more time to access files and folders compared to defragmented storage once that the movement of these mechanical parts cannot exceed a defined speed.
Now, as more of these fragments are created as more and more data is written and deleted, the storage drive needs to move further to access the files. Since more movement equals more time consumption, this eventually slows down the PC in reading and writing data.
Defragmentation is the right solution for him, with sharp lines up all memory points filled and closes the gap to avoid movement as much as possible, which in turn provides faster read and write speed on your computer.
Well, now that you understand fragmentation and why we need to defrag our drives, let’s move on to actually doing that. Windows offers two ways to defrag your volumes and let’s take a look at both.
How to defrag Windows 11 system drive
As mentioned above, defragmentation is the processing of organizing and consolidating files and data on the system drive to improve performance. Fragmented or scattered data creates access problems as it provides an inefficient way to access data on disk.
To optimize your system disk, use the guide below:
Windows 11 has a centralized location for most of its settings. From system settings to creating new users and updating Windows, everything can be done in the System Settings panel.
To access the system settings, you can use the Windows key + i shortcut or click Start ==> Settings
Alternatively, you can use the search box on the taskbar and search for Settings. Then select to open it.
The Windows settings panel should look like the image below. In Windows Settings, click System and select Storage in the right pane of the screen shown in the image below.
In the storage settings panel, click Advanced storage settings.
In the expanded panel of advanced storage settings, select Drive Optimization as highlighted below.
In the Optimize Drives settings panel, you will see status details, including the latest analysis, schedules, and other optimization details.
Since we want to schedule Windows 11 to run the defrag tool at a specific time, make sure Schedule Optimization is Disabled. If so, click Change settings button and disable scheduled optimization.
How to schedule disk defragment on Windows 11
Windows will schedule disk defragmentation daily or weekly, but not at a specific time. If you want Windows to control the schedule, turn on the default weekly schedule and forget about it.
For those who want to schedule the run at a specific time, they can turn off the above schedule and run a Task Scheduler instead.
Search for Task Scheduler and select the application.
When the Task Scheduler app opens, open the Task Scheduler Library ==> Microsoft ==> Windows ==> Defrag.
Then double-click the selected defrag schedule or click Properties on the right.
When Properties opens, click the Triggers tab and click New.
Then select the options and settings that best suit you. You can choose the time, how often and for how long.
When finished, click OK and activate the schedule.
Finally, right click on the scheduled task and enable it.
That should do it!
