How to Fix ‘AirPods Not Switching Between Mac and iPhone’ Issue – Guide
AirPods Pro Automatic Switching does not work is a common problem that iPhone and iPad users experience when trying to pair their AirPods to more than one iOS device. There may be different reasons for this problem with AirPods Pro Automatic Switching feature so there is no universal solution.
The release of iOS 14 in September brought several interesting and new improvements features for iPhones and iPads, many of which are focused on enhancing the functionality of users’ AirPods and AirPods Pro. These improvements and new features include Battery Notifications, Spatial Audio, Headset Accommodations and Auto Device Switching, all of which make using AirPods / AirPods Pro an even more pleasant and simplified experience.
Make sure your AirPods are compatible
All AirPod models – except the original 1st generation AirPods – support automatic audio switching. If you’re not sure what type of AirPods you use (first and second generation AirPods look the same), you can identify them by their model number.

Update your system software
Your AirPods automatically power on devices with at least iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and macOS Big Sur 11 or later installed. Therefore, you should check below the system software version on each iPad, iPhone and Mac you own and update them if necessary.
Even if you have the latest major update installed, it’s best to apply any available incremental system software updates as well. This should fix any bugs or known issues that prevent your AirPods from switching between devices automatically.
Update system software on iPhone and iPad
On the iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > About. You should see your device’s current iOS or iPadOS version listed next to Software Version.
If you are on iOS 13 or earlier, go back to the previous screen and tap Software Update. As long as your iPhone or iPad is compatible with iOS 14 / iPadOS 14 or later, you will see an option to update your system software here.

Update your AirPods firmware
Your AirPods will not switch between Apple devices if they are not running firmware version 3A283 or later. Normally, this isn’t something you need to worry about, as your AirPods update to the latest firmware on their own.
But if you’ve just started using a new pair of AirPods, make sure they’re up to date:
If you see an outdated version number (you can check the latest firmware version on the Wikipedia page for AirPods), you should install the latest firmware on your AirPods. While there is no option to do this manually, it is possible to “push” your AirPods to update the firmware.
