Almost all current browsers offer the option to browse incognito. This option is usually available in the browser settings menu and allows users to browse the Internet without worrying about the browser saving its history. However, some Chrome users have the problem of not having the option to open an incognito window available. This can be problematic as users.

What is the cause of the disappearance of the incognito browsing mode?

There are several causes for this problem. Here’s a list of things that can make Chrome’s incognito mode disappear.

  • Extensions: Extensions are known to cause problems and interfere with the proper functioning of a browser. So, if you have recently installed a new extension or have many extensions installed on your browser, one of those extensions may be causing the problem.
  • Inappropriate or corrupt settings: Sometimes the problem can simply be caused by a corrupted setting or file. It is not uncommon for settings to change after a long period of time. Sometimes these settings are corrupted or changed on their own or due to another file (not necessarily a virus). So, if the incognito mode has disappeared, you can fix the problem by simply resetting the settings to default.
  • IncognitoModeAvailability Availability Key: In the registry editor, there is a key called IncognitoModeAvailability. This key belongs to Google Chrome and the key value shows or hides Google Chrome’s incognito mode option. The problem can also be caused by this key. If the key value is intentionally or unintentionally changed to 1, the option of incognito mode disappears from Google Chrome.

    • But the good news is that you can easily fix the problem by changing the key value.

    Remove harmful software or extensions

  • Launch Chrome and choose Settings from the Chrome menu button.
  • Go to the Advanced Settings section and scroll to the final from page. Then click Clear up computer.
  • Click Find to detect harmful software. If there is harmful software, Chrome will remind you to remove it. After that, you can restart Chrome to see if the missing Chrome incognito mode is shown again.

    • Modify the IncognitoModeAvailability key value

  • Search for regedit in the Windows start menu and run it as an administrator.
  • In the left pane of the Registry Editor window, double-click HKEY_Local_Machine > SOFTWARE > Policies > Google > Chrome.
  • In the right pane, double-click the IncognitoModeAvailability key, modify the value data to 0, and click OK to save the change.
  • Close the Registry Editor window and launch up Chrome to check if Chrome’s incognito mode has returned successfully.

    • Restore default Chrome settings

  • Search for chrome: // settings in Chrome and go to final from the Advanced Settings page.
  • Choose the option Restore settings to original defaults. When the Reset Settings prompt appears, click Reset Settings to perform the operation. Then run Chrome to see if the issue is fixed.
