How to Fix ‘Gmail Not Receiving Emails’ Issue on iPhone – Guide

Gmail is one of the most famous email services in the world and also serves as the hub of social media. One of the biggest problems you’ll encounter with Gmail is not receiving new emails. This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as insufficient account storage, antivirus firewalls, or even server outages. You can apply some troubleshooting solutions tips to start receiving emails in your inbox again. You’re pretty sure you’re mostly typing your Gmail password, but your email doesn’t load on your iPhone or iPad.

Or maybe Gmail was working on your iPhone, but now you’re on vacation and it suddenly stopped. In this article, I’ll explain why Gmail doesn’t work on your iPhone or iPad, and how to fix the issue so that your email is loaded into the Mail app.

Visit the Gmail website and check for alerts

We need to visit the Gmail website to get a better idea of what’s going on, because the Mail app on your iPhone or iPad doesn’t provide details on why you can’t log in. Use a computer if you can (it’s easier to navigate the Gmail site with a bigger screen), but this process will also work on iPhone and iPad.

If you are using an iPhone, you may see a pop-up prompting you to download an app – but now is not the time. Tap the lowercase “mobile Gmail website” at the bottom of the screen.

After logging in, look for an alert box or email in your inbox that says something like “Someone has your password” or “We’ve blocked a login attempt”. If you receive such a box or email, click on the internal link labeled “Review your devices now”, “That was me” or similar – the exact language changes frequently.

Review your recent devices on the Google website

Even if you haven’t received an email about a blocked sign-in attempt, it’s a good idea to visit the section called Device Activity and Notifications on the My Google Account website. You will be able to see all recent devices that tried to log into your account and unlock the ones that used to be you. (Fortunately, they are all of you!)

After you tell Google that you actually tried to log into your account, your email should start loading onto your iPhone or iPad. If not, read on.

Reconfigure the CAPTCHA

Gmail has a little-known fix, called CAPTCHA reset, which momentarily unlocks some of Google’s security features to allow new devices to connect to Gmail. I learned about this when I worked at the Apple Store, and I don’t know how anyone could have known it exists without the benefit of really nerdy friends. Glad to be able to share this with you.

Make sure IMAP is enabled

Another reason Gmail may not be working on your iPhone or iPad is that IMAP (the technology Gmail uses to deliver email to your device) may be disabled in your Gmail settings. If IMAP is disabled on, you will not be able to get your email from the server.

Learn how to enable IMAP for Gmail, check out my short article called How do I enable IMAP for Gmail on iPhone, iPad, and computer? and then come back here to finish up. The process is a bit complicated, especially on the iPhone, so I took it step by step guide with photos to help.

Remove your Gmail account from your iPhone and set it up Up Again

If you can log in to without any problems, you’ve verified that your device isn’t blocking notifications and device activity, reset CAPTCHA, and are sure IMAP is enabled, it’s time to try the modern version of the “disconnect and connect again” solution: Remove your Gmail account from your iPhone and set it up up again.

In most cases, all of a person’s emails are stored on Gmail’s servers. This means that by removing your Gmail account from the iPhone, you are not deleting anything from the server itself, and by setting up your account again, all your emails, contacts and notes will be returned immediately.
