Windows 10 introduced a new browser called Microsoft Edge, which is generally well received by consumers. Unfortunately, some users have reported that a fraudulent website has hijacked Microsoft Edge.

While this may seem like a serious security issue, it’s actually relatively simple to resolve. When Microsoft Edge is hijacked, you will usually see the same website every time you open it. This page typically displays an error warning instructing you to call a specific number to resolve the security issue. Despite what the error message claims, your computer is not infected with a virus or malware.

This warning is displayed because you are visiting a fraudulent website; however, you can quickly resolve this issue using one of our solutions.

How do I fix an Edge browser that has been hijacked?

  1. Activate airplane mode
  2. Turn off your internet connection
  3. Quickly open a new tab
  4. open one of your favorites
  5. Clear Edge Cache

1. Turn on Airplane mode

If Microsoft Edge gets hijacked, try turning on Airplane mode. To turn on airplane mode, click the network icon on the taskbar and choose Airplane mode from the menu. Once Airplane mode is turned on, open Microsoft Edge and close the tab. Close Microsoft Edge, turn off Airplane mode and everything should return to normal.

2. Turn off your internet connection

  • Open Edge and click on more icon in the upper left corner. Choose Settings from the menu.
  • In the Open With section, choose a specific page or page, select Customize from the menu, and enter the address for that page.
  • Click the plus sign button and your new home page should be added. If you have more than one page in this list, you might need to drag the newly added site to the top of the list or remove all other sites.
  • 3. Quickly open a new tab

    To fix this issue, users are advising to quickly open a new tab before the error message appears. To do this, press New tab button as soon as possible when Microsoft Edge starts.

    4. Open one of your favorites

    Microsoft Edge will display the same message every time you open it, but you can fix this error by opening one of your bookmarks. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Go to this file:
  • C: Users – your Favorite username.
  • In the Favorites folder, you will see some of your websites.
  • Double click on any of them and it should open in Microsoft Edge.
  • Now close the problematic tab and the problem should be fixed permanently.
  • If you don’t have any bookmarks, you can simply open any other file on the Edge, an image or a PDF for example, and close the problematic tab.

    5. Clear Edge Cache

  • Start Edge and keep pressing Ctrl + T to open a new tab.
  • If you are able to do this, the error message should not appear.
  • You may have to try this a few times before you can do this correctly.
  • Close the problematic tab.
  • Click the More icon in the upper right corner and choose Settings from the menu.
  • Scroll down to the Clear Browsing Data section and click Choose what to clear.
  • Select Browsing History, Cookies and Saved Site Data, Data and Cached Files, and click Clear.
  • Once the navigation data is cleared, restart the Edge and your issue should be corrected.
