Windows 10 / 8.1 / 8 “Reset this PC” is a quick solution when your PC is not working well and you want to reset it to factory settings. Unfortunately, sometimes the reset didn’t work. One of the most common issues is the error “There was a problem restarting your PC” in Windows 10. This is a known bug that is noticed by Microsoft. “However, the attempt to reboot this PC failed every time I tried to reboot this PC and then remove everything.

Use system file checker

Checking System File Checker is the first method you can use to try to fix the reset issue. System File Checker is a free tool created by Microsoft to help you find and recover corrupt files in Windows 10. It is a standard Windows troubleshooting utility. You should run System File Checker through the sfc /scan Windows command prompt.

Follow the steps below to open the Command Prompt and get started:

  • Enter the command prompt in the Windows search bar, hover your cursor over the top result and click Run as administrator.
  • Type the sfc /scannow command as shown below and press ENTER.
  • Return to a stable system with a system restore point

If you are still getting the message “There was a problem restarting your PC. No changes were made. ” then you can try to resolve it with a System Restore.

System Restore is another Windows tool designed to repair damaged software and files. It works by taking a “snapshot” of your Windows files and system files. It can bring your system back to a healthy state after any file corruption.

In another words, System Restore takes your PC (and its files and settings) to an earlier point in time where everything was working, and fixes various types of errors in the process. Here are the methods you need to follow to do just that:

  • Type system restore in the Windows search bar on the taskbar and click Create a restore point.
  • On the System Protection tab, click System Restore.
  • In the next dialog box, click Next.
  • Choose the desired restore point and click Next.
  • Disable REAgentC.exe

If you still cannot reset Windows 10, try this method. You will have to use Command Prompt again for this. By disabling REAgentC.exe, you will be able to fix the Windows 10 error “There was a problem restarting your PC”.

REAgentC.exe is a Windows executable file that can be used to configure Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) – a collection of tools that can be used to solve common Windows problems. When your system crashes during normal boot up, it will try to access the Windows Recovery Environment. Temporarily disabling it can help your computer restart.

To get started, open Command Prompt as an administrator again as shown in the first method. Now run these commands from the command line as shown in the screenshots:

  • reagent / disable
  • reagent / enable
  • Rename the system and software registry section

To do this, run Command Prompt as administrator one more time. At the command prompt, type the following commands:

  • Type cd% windir% system32 config and press ENTER.
  • Then type ren system.001 and press ENTER.
  • Finally, type ren software software.001 and press ENTER once more.
  • Finally, type exit to close the command prompt. Now restart your PC and try restarting again. You should not see the error message right now.
  • Run Startup Repair

If none of these methods have worked so far and you haven’t been able to reset Windows 10 so far, the last solution left is to use Windows Startup Repair feature. To perform this repair, you will need a bootable DVD or USB drive with Windows 10 installer.

If you have it ready, use the steps below:

  • Insert the USB or DVD into your PC and restart the system.
  • When the computer boots from USB or DVD, choose Troubleshoot.
  • Now click on Advanced Options.
  • Then click Startup Repair.
  • Select your account.
  • Enter your account password.
  • Click Continue to start the repair process.
