How to have Command Prompt on Windows 10 in Context Menu – Guide
Command Prompt is an incredibly useful way to accomplish certain tasks. For example, if you want to run programs with special parameters, Command Prompt is a faster way to do it. The problem is that navigating the directory structure of a modern computer can be a real pain when using Command Prompt. Especially since Windows 10 supports these long program and folder names. The good news is that you can open Command Prompt directly from a Windows Explorer window. Taking you straight to the location of that folder.
In early versions of Windows 10, there was a context menu entry called “Open Command Window Here” which would open the command prompt in the folder location you specified. For example, if you right-click on a folder and use this command, the Command Prompt will start at the current folder location. Microsoft removed this option after the 2017 Creators Update for Windows 10. Why? This is likely due to Microsoft’s effort to divert people from the Command Prompt to use PowerShell.
Getting this command back isn’t very difficult, but it does require some tweaking the Windows Registry. It’s best to skip this method if you’re not comfortable doing it, but if you really want that context menu option back, here’s what to do.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Directory shell cmd
Hide the “Open PowerShell Window Here” option
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Directory shell Powershell
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Directory Background shell cmd
