How to make new User accounts graphically in Linux Mint – Guide
Users are similar accounts in Linux that describe the extent of their access to specific system files and settings. Typically, you already create a user when you first download and install the operating system, but you might need to create more users later for different purposes, such as different people using a similar computer.
How to create a user?
Basically, there are two ways to create a new user in Linux – using the graphical user interface (GUI) or the command line interface (CLI). I will be detailing the methods in this article and the OS I am using is Ubuntu 16.10 but it should be more or less the same in other Ubuntu based distros.
Having different users means that each user will have access to their own areas in the system. Documents, photos, videos and so on will be separated, as with many users on other operating systems.
STEP 1
Click on the Linux Mint menu and enter users to start searching for the relevant console. From the search results, choose Users & Groups and enter your password. The Users and Groups console is quite basic and thankfully easy to use. At first, you only see your own username from when you installed Linux Mint.
STEP 2
To add a new user, click on the Add button. button at the bottom of the console. There are two types of users you can create: Standard and Administrator. Unless the new user needs to install new applications or access parts of the file system in addition to their Home folder and then choose the Default account type. Otherwise, use the Administrator account type.
STEP 3
Enter the new user’s full name, followed by the username they will have when logging into Linux Mint. Make sure the username is all lowercase, az and 0-9 characters only. You can have periods, underscores, or hyphens if you wish. Click on the Add button button when you are ready to continue
STEP 4
The new user will appear in the list of current Linux Mint users, in alphabetical order. There is currently no password set, so click the user in the current users list, then click the No password set option under the user’s username.
STEP 5
You can now enter a password for the new user or you can click the curved arrow on the final from the New Password text box to generate a password for you as well as display it. Of course, it’s a good idea to come up with the strongest possible password. When finished, click on the Change button. button.
STEP 6
You can close the Users and Groups console window now as the new user has been created. If you click on Mint Menu, followed by Logout, you will be presented with the Mint Login Manager. The new user will be present in the list of currently available users. Click on it to login.
STEP 7
Once logged in, the new user must set up your own desktop wallpaper, icons, panel, menu and so on. Depending on the type of account you set up as: Standard or Administrator, they will not be able to install any new apps. This screenshot is of a standard user account type.
STEP 8
If necessary, you can quickly switch and log in as an administrator account by clicking the Mint menu and looking for a new login. Click on the New Login app and you can login as an administrator without logging out the first user.
COMMAND LINE ACCOUNTS
As you would expect, you can also create a new user from the command line. Open up a Terminal session in the main (your) Administrator account.
STEP 1
The process for adding a new user from the command line is relatively simple. To get started, type: sudo adduser
STEP 2
You can check the new user’s details and account type in the Users and Groups console. If you want to delete a user from Mint, you can enter: sudo deluser
