How to Use Snap on Windows 11 – Guide

Windows gives you the ability to organize the apps, files, and browsers you open on your screen based on the different layouts you choose to take advantage of all the available space. This type of action is called “docking” windows. On Windows 10, tuning is done manually via keyboard shortcuts and a dedicated menu option called Snap Assist. With Windows 11, this is much easier using a visual aid feature called “Snap Layout”. This tutorial will show you how to get snappin’!

While you can dock windows in Windows 10, there isn’t much variety compared to final look out of windows. However, with Windows 11 Snap Layout feature, you can open windows that cover larger screens and many other possibilities. No need to drag or resize windows. Snap Layout is one of the productivity tools provided by Microsoft in Windows 11. While the ability to snap your active window into different layouts with more options doesn’t sound exciting, it’s a useful new time-saving option for those who regularly work with multiple open windows .

Windows 11 Snap layouts are a set of predefined templates that arrange application windows on your screen based on your choice in a “Snap Navigator”. This navigation feature immediately appears as you hover around Maximize button.

How to enable Snap assist on Windows 11

To enable Snap assist on Windows 11, follow these steps:

  • Open settings.
  • Click System.
  • Click on the Multitasking page on the right side.
  • Activate the toggle button on Snap windows to enable the feature.
  • (Optional) Turn off the Snap windows toggle button to disable the feature.
  • After completing the steps, you can proceed to adjust the settings and start using the feature.

    • How to configure Snap Assist settings on Windows 11

    To adjust Snap assist settings on Windows 11, use these steps:

  • Open settings.
  • Click System.
  • Click on the Multitasking page on the right side.
  • Activate the toggle button on Snap windows to enable the feature (if applicable).
  • Click on the Snap windows setting to expand the options.
  • Check or uncheck the options you want to use in Windows 11 when adjusting windows:
  • When docking a window, I show what I can dock next to it – disable preview to select other windows to dock on the canvas.

  • When I take out a window, it automatically scales it to fill the available space – it prevents the second window from using the remaining screen space.
  • When I resize a snapped window, it simultaneously resizes any adjacent snapped windows – If you disable this option, you will need to resize the snapped windows manually. After completing the steps, you can use the Snap wizard according to your configuration.

    • Disable Snap layouts

    On Windows 11, “Snap layouts” is enabled by default. if you don’t like the feature, you can disable it with these steps:

  • Open settings.
  • Click System.
  • Click on the Multitasking page on the right side.
  • Click on the Snap windows setting.
  • Clear the Show snap layouts when hovering over a window maximizes option button option.
  • After completing the steps, hover over Maximize button will no longer show the layout menu for docking windows.

    • Disable Snap groups

    Taskbar snap groups are also enabled by default, and you can disable the feature with these steps:

  • Open settings.
  • Click System.
  • Click on the Multitasking page on the right side.
  • Click on the Snap windows setting.
  • Uncheck Show snap layouts the application is a part of when I hover over the taskbar buttons option.
  • After completing the steps, hovering over the application that belongs to a snapshot group will stop showing a preview and return to the group.

    • How to use Snap assist on Windows 11

    Starting with Windows 11, there are three ways to use Snap Assist. You can use the mouse to drag and drop windows where you want to dock them. You can use keyboard shortcuts to position windows wherever you like. And you can use Snap menu layouts from Maximize menu button to create different snap groups.

    Instant layouts

    In Windows 11, Snap layouts are a new thing. feature part of the Snap wizard that makes it easy for anyone to organize windows by providing you with a visual aid with different layouts you can use to fit windows on your screen. This is not only a great way to help non-technical users, but also to better organize windows on larger screens. To use Windows 11 Snap layouts, follow these steps:

  • Mouse over Maximize button.
  • Select one of the four or six available layouts, choosing where you want to dock the first window.
  • Select the next app you want to adjust in the preview.
  • Continue docking windows depending on the layout selected.
  • If you removed a window from the group, you can readjust it by hovering over Maximize button and select the same layout and location where you want to place the window.

    On the other hand, “Snap Groups” allows you to return to previously adjusted windows without readjusting anything. When the feature is enabled, you can adjust windows normally, then if you switch to another application, you can hover over the application that belongs to the group on the taskbar and select the view to jump to the adjustment group quickly. To return to the adjusted windows group, follow these steps:

  • Mouse over an application that belongs to one of the groups.
  • Select group view to switch to group snapshot.
  • After completing the steps, when working in a different window, you can quickly switch to the previous snap group without resetting all windows again.

    In Windows 11, you can also use mouse and keyboard shortcuts to adjust windows. However, you can only take up to four windows in four different layouts. if you want to take up for three windows in a vertical orientation, you’ll need to use Snap layouts.

  • Click on the app’s title bar.
  • Drag the window to the left or right edge of the screen and drop it when you see the snap assistant preview.
  • Select the second app you want to run along with the other in the preview.
  • If you don’t see the app you want, open it manually and drag it to the opposite edge of the screen.
  • Alternatively, you can use the Windows key + left arrow key to adjust the current focus window to the left or the Windows key + right arrow key to adjust the window to the right.

    To fit three windows on the screen, follow these steps:

  • Click on the app’s title bar.
  • Drag the window to the left or right edge of the screen and drop it when you see the snap assistant preview.
  • Press the Esc key on your keyboard.
  • Click on the title bar of a second window.
  • Drag and drop the window into one of the corners.
  • Select the third window to place it in the remaining corner.
  • If you want to use keyboard shortcuts, use Windows key + left arrow to adjust a window to the left, then Windows key + right arrow + down arrow to adjust the window in the lower right corner, and Windows key + right arrow + up arrow to adjust the window in the upper right corner.

  • Drag and drop the window to any of the four corners of the screen.
