Dell’s first portable monitor, the C1422H, was announced in this year. This means that Dell is new to the portable monitor market. Dell is competing with companies like Lenovo, Asus, MSI, and a large number of Chinese OEMs that have flooded online markets like Amazon. The C1422H, which we are testing, is surprisingly simple for a product that wants to be one of the best portable monitors.
The C1422H has a Full HD IPS panel, a refresh rate of 60 Hz, a response time of 6 ms, and an adjustable stand that is built in. But the C1442H doesn’t have some features that most portable monitors have, like built-in speakers and HDMI connectivity (it only features USB-C with DisplayPort 1.2 Alt-Mode support).

Dell C1422H review: Design

Anyone who has seen a modern Dell XPS laptop like the Dell XPS 13 should recognise the design of the C1422H. The top and sides have the same thin bezels, and there is a bigger one below the screen with the Dell logo in the middle. On most of Dell’s laptops, the logo is centred both vertically and horizontally on the back of the screen lid. On the C1422H, however, the logo is higher up. It’s a small difference, but I noticed it as soon as I took the monitor out of the box it came in.
The monitor’s adjustable stand is one of my favorite things about the Dell C1422H. The stand also serves as the monitor’s base. The display can be set anywhere from 10 degrees down to 90 degrees up because it has a hinged design. The hinge has a lot of resistance, and the way it moves gives a sense of quality. The rubber feet on the bottom of the C1422H make sure it won’t move around on your desk once it’s in place. You can buy this monitor from its official website.
Dell C1422H review: Display
The way the Dell C1422H is made also has a drawback: when folded and put away, it makes the portable display thicker. It is also a bit heavier, but that only matters to people who are worried about carrying too much weight. Don’t worry, though, because it’s about the same size as a notebook and will still fit in most laptop bags.
Dell C1422H review: Image Quality

The C1422H is a 14-inch monitor with a 1920×1080 IPS panel and Full HD resolution. Like many other monitors in this category, it has a refresh rate of 60 Hz and a response time of just 6ms, according to Dell.
Dell says that the C1422H can get as bright as 300 nits, but our tests showed that it could only get as bright as 241 nits. When Comfort View was turned on, that number went down to 230 nits. The anti-glare coating kept reflections from the lights above my desk from bothering me, and it kept the sun away when we looked at it outside.
Dell C1422H review: Performance
The Lenovo ThinkVision M14 has similar colour quality and is also limited to USB-C, but it costs less than $250. Then there are models like the Lepow C2, which costs $199 and has stereo speakers, HDMI, and DisplayPort ports.
The C1422H from Dell gets the basics right, but it needs more features to stand out in a field full of portable monitors. If you connect the C1422H to a fairly new laptop, we could almost understand why it doesn’t have an HDMI port.
Dell C1422H review: Connectivity
Dell 14 Portable Monitor (C1422H) is a mobile display with basic features but a high-quality screen with plenty of brightness, contrast, and sRGB colour coverage. The frame of the monitor feels solid, and its hinged stand lets you tilt it at a wide range of angles.
Both data and power can be sent through the two USB Type-C ports. If you don’t need extra connections like HDMI and don’t mind that the C1422H has few buttons and can’t be touched, it could be a good buy. We’d just (um) keep an eye on the different discounts on Dell.com, which at press time included $70 off.
Final Words
The Dell C1422H is a portable monitor that works well enough. It’s best for mobile office use, as it makes you more productive when working on a laptop because the text is clear, it’s easy to see in bright rooms, and the greys are all the same. It’s also fine for people who make media or watch videos. Sadly, it’s not as good for gaming because it has a slow response time, bad overshoot, and doesn’t support advanced gaming features like FreeSync.
