Nokia 7.2 – Introduction

HMD Global unveiled a host of phones during the IFA month. While Nokia’s 2720 Flip was in the spotlight for its nostalgic rocking phone design, the new Nokia 7.2 was the one that caught our attention. Also, it is one of the first Nokia brand phones in India to offer three rear cameras and to display a new high-end design.

The Nokia 7.2 brings many significant improvements over its predecessor in terms of camera hardware, display quality, battery capacity, and processing power. This is, no doubt, the most exciting device among Nokia’s waste end, thanks to its appeal for the mass market and its specifications. In the end, it lacks a bit in several areas, but the Nokia 7.2 is a solid choice for anyone whose budget is less than $349.

Nokia 7.2 – Design

Nokia 7.2 is one of the most stylish phones on the market. The angles are rounded, and the circular camera module in the center is prettier than the vertical camera system of its predecessor, although it owes its inspiration to Motorola phones.

There is a subtle effect that plays on the rear window when it captures the light, especially on the Cyan Green color, where the Nokia 7.2 looks more sophisticated. It is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 at the front and back. HMD says it uses a polymer composite around the frame that doubles the strength of the polycarbonate, but lighter. This means that the Nokia 7.2 is more durable than the average phone, but the essential parts of the phone are still made of glass, so you will want to use a case.

Fortunately, the glass has a matte texture on the back, which protects it from fingerprints and fingerprints. It’s a shame that the re’s no IP68 water resistance to cover all bases, but it’s a splash-proof, so it should be able to use in the rain.

Nokia 7.2 – Display

Nokia has equipped 7.2 with a 6.3-inch IPS LCD screen. It’s an undeniably big screen, and you will not pull this notification panel from the top of the screen with your hand. But it is well proportioned to the extent that it fits almost anything, without making the phone particularly challenging to handle. This impression of the correct proportion is also present in the Full HD + resolution of the 1080 x 2280 display. It is not as dense in pixels as the flagship Android phones such as the Galaxy S10, but it is quite suitable for 1080p content display.

Nokia’s PureDisplay technology relies on a Pixelworks processor for upward conversion from SDR to HDR. This is not the most pronounced contrast on the phone, it’s still an LCD, but the video content of Netflix and Amazon Video still looks beautiful. Another feature is Night Light, which darkens the screen to reduce the blue light levels that disrupt sleep when using the phone at night.

The Nokia 7.2 screen is fantastic, offering deep, punchy colors that will make you think you’re watching an OLED display. The screen is clean and has good brightness levels indoors, but not enough for outdoor viewing. Nokia 7.2 complies with the Widevine L1 standard. You can stream content to Netflix and Prime Video in HD resolution.

Nokia 7.2 – Camera

Cameras have been upgraded to Nokia 7.2 compared to previous Nokia 7.1. The predecessor offered a standard 12MP + 5MP dual camera configuration at the rear. Still, the Nokia 7.2 features a triple camera system, including a 48MP primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The front selfie camera has also been upgraded from an 8MP sensor to the 20MP sensor.

The cameras on the Nokia 7.2 seem relevant considering the competition. The primary camera manages to capture beautiful pictures in broad daylight with saturated and vibrant colors. It may sound a bit too loud at times, but you’ll probably be happy with the results. With wide-angle lenses, you can add a new perspective to the photos by expanding the frame.

There is a visible offset of the color tone between the two cameras. The pictures look warmer with the primary camera, while the colors are more relaxed in the wide-angle shots. You can capture beautiful outdoor shots with a blue sky using the wide-angle camera, but do not expect them to be sharp or detailed.

By default, the new Nokia 7.2 will capture photos with 12-megapixel resolution and use pixel binning to assemble adjacent pixels to provide brighter, more detailed images. You can change to a raw resolution of 48 MPa if you want to capture very detailed pictures, especially if you’re going to explore a large poster.

Nokia 7.2 – Battery

The Nokia 7.2 battery, however, compensates for the unsatisfactory handicap of the SoC. The 3,500mAh battery allows us to get more than one day of use quickly. During our review, with this phone as a daily driver, we used social media and utility apps, played massive games for about 90 minutes, listened to music with wired headphones for about 3 hours, watched online videos, and surfed the web.

The phone still had about 10-15% juice in the battery at the end of the day. Nokia includes a 10W charger in the retail pack, which takes the phone from 0 to 100% in about an hour and a half.

Nokia 7.2 – Performance

The new Nokia 7.2 runs on an Octa-core Snapdragon 660 SoC coupled with up to 6GB of RAM. You may be familiar with the processor because it is over two years old now, which can put some users off. But the Snapdragon 660 SoC is a robust midrange processor, renowned for its performance and ease of managing everyday tasks.

When it comes to social networking, messaging, or gaming, the Snapdragon 660 will provide a smooth, latency-free experience. Based on a 14 nm process, the processor is also very energy efficient. It is equipped with an Adreno 512 graphics processor, so you will not be able to run games like PUBG with high graphics settings without experiencing any lag and cadence issues.

While the Snapdragon’s 660 Soc is known to be an eye-catching processor, the Nokia 7.2 does not look like an eye-catching smartphone. This is mainly due to the standard Android interface, which comes with slow animations that can give the impression that the phone is more time-consuming than it is.

Nokia 7.2 – Verdict

The Nokia 7.2 is a significant upgrade from its predecessor, which incorporates a faster processor, better cameras, and a new design language rather attractive. The phone’s display is pretty good and its daily performance reliable. The Nokia 7.2’s cameras are ok, but not The Best in the segment.

When it comes to battery life, this phone can easily last a day. An excellent software experience and an extremely flashy design apart, I think users will not find a better value in the Nokia 7.2. The performance of the device will leave you wanting and, while the battery of the device may be sufficient for some, competing devices will certainly offer a higher battery capacity with faster-charging speeds.

I think the Nokia 7.2 is for hardcore fans of Nokia who will not give up the brand, anyway, which is understandable. Nokia has delivered quality phones during the year as part of its reintegration into the smartphone space. But I think that just as Samsung has now learned the lesson that people do not want to pay more for the value of the brand alone, Nokia should also follow these guidelines.
