Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty review 2024: great morale system

The “Hidden Dragon” in Wo Long’s title is fitting for a game that seems to have appeared out of nowhere to wreak havoc on the action RPG genre. That’s not to say it doesn’t follow some of that foundation; Nioh and Dark Souls’ influence can still be felt, but without those limitations, Wo Long is free to soar.

It’s the result of a collaboration between Team Ninja and KOEI, a publisher best known for its Chinese historical-themed video games set around the Three Kingdoms period, most notably Dynasty Warriors. Wo Long is also set during this time period and combines elements of historical fiction, the polished fighting style for which Team Ninja is famous, and the magical and demonic.

While Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty may not be as groundbreaking as 2020’s Nioh 2, it nonetheless provides players with the same need for fast-paced combat, challenging yet rewarding game play.

Being a nothing doesn’t mean feeling like one. Fights in this game begin with a dizzying dance of spins, hops, and kicks that reminds me of Wuxia movies. These flicks are the inspiration for this game. The battles in Wo Long are unlike those in any other soulslike or even Team Ninja’s own Nioh 2, which is also in the soulslike genre. The flow of Wo Long is less zigzagging and more forward and backward all the time. They concentrate on hunting for opportunities to land lethal strikes and making sure that your defences do not become more vulnerable in any way.

This is due to the fact that, unlike in Souls games, you do not have stamina. You are instead equipped with a spirit gauge. When the gauge is at its maximum, you have unlimited opportunities to attack, block, and evade, but you must be exact in how you carry out these actions. Your morale will suffer if you play too defensively, if you keep using your most powerful attacks, or if your opponent successfully blocks your assaults. It will now reward you with perks and bonuses that make the action slightly less difficult to complete. Your character’s stats can be improved by gaining morale, which is a resource obtained by defeating foes and erecting banners across each zone.

When you explore new areas and eliminate a large number of foes, Wo Long basically rewards you with free levels, which makes the game easier to play when the pressure is on. When you pass away, your morale will be reduced, however there are checkpoints dispersed over the maps in the form of flagpoles that will prevent it from going below a particular threshold. They’re required for multiple tasks, and we couldn’t help but grow connected to them. One of the earliest heroes to give help, Zhao Yun was my number one person, my best friend.

Knowing the history of the Three Kingdoms, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms in particular, whether through Dynasty Warriors or any of the other adaptations, makes their appearance feel more natural. It’s entertaining to see real-life figures make cameo appearances, although with more significant parts, in movies like The Avengers.
