How to Block Websites in Chrome: Businesses

If an organization has a Google account, network administrators can control access to the webpage. Organizations often choose to block sites that contain unprofessional or pornographic content that have the potential to distract employees (such as social media or entertainment sites) or that contain malware, adware, or any other unsafe links.

If you’re a Google admin in your organization, navigate to the Admin console home page in your Google account. Select Devices and choose Chrome.

Select Settings.

Select Users and Browsers.

Select the appropriate organizational unit (your company). If you are setting restrictions for a smaller group in the organization, select or create a child organizational unit under the larger one.

In URL Blocking, enter URLs that are not allowed.

To create exceptions for blocked URLs, you can create a whitelist. This list will replace all web pages on the blocked list; for example, if Twitter is included in your blocked URLs, but you listed it under Allow, users in your organization will be able to access Twitter.

How to Block Websites in Chrome: Personal User

The easiest way to block a website on a Windows computer is to use Chrome’s BlockSite extension.

Open Chrome and search the Chrome Web Store. In the store, search for BlockSite.

There are other website blocking apps available, but BlockSite has been the most popular since the summer. Click on BlockSite and select Add to Chrome.

Once you’ve downloaded BlockSite, click on its logo in the upper right corner of the browser, to the left of Chrome’s three vertical dots. Accept the terms and conditions.

Once BlockSite is installed and a web page has loaded, type any URL you want to block in the bar that says “Enter a web address”.

Once you enter a URL and finalize your choice by clicking the checkmark, this site will no longer load correctly in your browser and you will receive a message stating that you have blocked it.
