Remote Desktop allows you to remotely access or control another system from any location using the Windows Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). By default, Remote Desktop access is disabled in Windows 11. To use this feature, you must first enable the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).

Enable Remote Desktop on Windows 11

Through the Settings app

Press – Win + I.

Click – System in the left pane of the Settings app.

Go right, select Remote Desktop.

Click enable/disable remote desktop.

You will find a pop up – You and selected users in User Accounts will be able to connect to this PC remotely. Click – Confirm.

When you enable, 2 options show up.

Check the option – Require devices to use network level authentication to connect (recommended). You can see the Remote Desktop Port number. After enabling this option (NLA), you will have to authenticate incoming connections to ensure there are no protection issues.

Now click Search on the taskbar and type control. Press Enter to open Control Panel.

Click – Network and Sharing Center.

In the next window, click – Change advanced sharing settings in the left pane.

Check the radio box for Enable network discovery.

Click – Save Changes.

Enable Remote Desktop in Windows 11 through Control Panel

Press – Winkey.

Type – advanced system settings.

Hit – Enter.

In the System Properties window, click the Remote tab.

Check the box for – Allow remote assistance connections to this computer.

Go to the Remote Desktop section.

Also select – Allow remote connections to this computer.

And check – Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (recommended).

Click Apply and OK to save the settings changes.

How to connect to Remote Desktop in Windows 11

Using legacy remote desktop connection application

Click Search on the taskbar.

Type – Remote Desktop.

Press Enter.

When a Remote Desktop Connection application appears, enter the name of the computer you want to add. Note that the computer name in

written right below “How to connect to this PC ”on the“Remote Desktop Settings” page.

Click – Connect.

If you want to use the username, click – Show options.

And check – Allow me to save credentials if I wish.

Through the Remote Desktop Store app

Download Microsoft Remote Desktop from this link.

When installation is complete, launch the app.

Click + Add on the top menu bar.

Select PCs or desktops as needed.

If you selected PCs, enter the formal name or IP address of your PC.

Click – Save.

Click on the computer name to start the remote connection.

Allow remote connections on Firewall

Press – Win + S.

Type – control.

Hit – Enter.

Select – Windows Defender Firewall.

Click on – “Allow an application or feature through Windows Defender Firewall” in the left pane of the next window.

Now click on – Change settings.

In allowed apps and features, in the Name column, find Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance.

Check the boxes for Private and Public for both applications.

Click – OK.
