How to pin a file or folder to the Chromebook taskbar – Guide

In general, Chromebook users spend most of their time in cloud services. But every now and then we still need to access local folders or files on the system. Chrome OS now has a “hidden” feature which lets you pin local files and folders directly to the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, also known as the taskbar, or better known as the “shelf” on Chromebooks. This one feature, called “Retention Space”, gives you quick, one-click access to local folders or files when you need them. At the time of writing this article, the “Space for feature is only available as an experimental and optional Google Chrome flag.

Google usually hides the next ones features as “flags” because they are still in beta and not ready for release. While most flags are safe, that doesn’t rule out the possibility that some of them could negatively affect your browser’s performance. To this holding space feature, tests showed that activation and use did not cause any “side effects” on the system. If you’re using a Chromebook, most of your work is done with cloud services. However, there may be times when you want quick access to a local file or folder.

How to pin a file or folder to the Chromebook taskbar

At the time of writing this text, the feature is hidden and you will need to enable a flag first. To do this, open the Chrome browser and type the following in the address bar and press Enter:

chrome://flags/#enable-holding-space

This will take you to the “Quick access to screenshots, downloads and files” flag. Select the drop-down menu and set it to On. Then you will need to click on the Restart button button at the bottom of the browser to apply the flag.

After the browser restarts, you will see a new “Retention Space” icon in the lower right corner of the taskbar next to the clock. Click on it and you’ll have quick access to your latest screenshots and downloads.

To pin a file or folder to the taskbar, open the Files app and find the item you want to pin. Note that this also works for the Play Store and Linux partitions on your Chromebook. Right-click the item and click Pin to Shelf on the menu.

After that, by clicking on the Holding Space icon, you will find the file or folder you pinned. For example, here I have pinned a document and the “Downloads” folder.

If you want to unpin an item from the Retention Space, hover over it and click the pin icon.
