How to Disable Cortana on Windows 11 PC – Guide

Cortana is Microsoft’s cloud-based digital assistant that helps users with their voice commands. It has been an integral part of the Windows operating system since Windows 8.1. You can use Cortana to find files, folders, and apps on your PC, track calendars, set reminders, search the web, configure computer settings, and more. A lot of people aren’t big fans of Cortana and find it more annoying than helpful. Although Cortana is a personalized service feature, most of the time does not find valid results for user searches. Furthermore, it collects information about your habits, location, calendar entries, search history, emails and much more and stores them on a cloud server.

Also, it’s boring up system resources and can slow down your system. So Microsoft decided to remove Cortana from the launch experience and taskbar in Windows 11. It is no longer the default search engine in Windows 11, just an app. Although it comes pre-installed with the Windows 11 operating system, it is not active by default. While Microsoft is no longer trying to force people to use Cortana, it still boots with the system and runs in the background on Windows 11, waiting to be invoked.

Disable Cortana in Windows 11 Settings

You can disable Cortana in Windows 11 settings with the following steps. Click Start and launch the Windows 11 Settings app. You can use the shortcut command Win+I to launch the settings app directly.

In the list of settings, select Applications and select Applications and Features.

Disable Cortana using Group Policy (GPO)

You can permanently disable Cortana in Windows 11 using Group Policy. The Group Policy method is useful when you want to disable access to Cortana on domain-joined Windows 11 computers.

When you want to disable Cortana on multiple Windows 11 computers joined to an Active Directory domain, Group Policy is the best option.

Before creating a GPO to disable Cortana, have a few devices for testing purposes. It is not recommended to deploy a GPO directly to production servers and workstations.

Let’s create a new GPO to disable Cortana on Windows 11. Log on to a domain controller or member server installed with GPMC. Start Group Policy Management Tools from Server Manager > Tools.

After the Group Policy Management console starts, expand the domain and right-click Group Policy Objects and select New.

Specify the GPO name as Disable Cortana or something similar and click OK.

In the Group Policy Management editor, navigate to the following settings: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search.
