Guide: Installing Old Versions of Creative Cloud Software – Guide
Here is the solution to a problem that customers occasionally encounter. In a workgroup that relies on Adobe Creative Cloud applications, one person can upgrade to the latest versions of Photoshop, In Design, and Illustrator, while others cannot. If that person suddenly opens and resaves a file in the new version, users of the previous version might not be able to open it or certain aspects of the file might disappear.
Upgrading is not always possible – some people may have very old Macs or not be using a sufficiently new version of macOS. More often than not, however, the rest of the group is deeply involved in a big project and sensibly doesn’t want to introduce potential problems by modifying their software midstream. Fortunately, Adobe makes it easy to download previous versions of all Creative Cloud apps so that the person who upgraded can join the rest of the team with the older version.
How to check which version you have
Open the Applications folder and locate your software. You’ll notice that the Creative Cloud year is listed (2021 in this case), but there’s also a more specific version number to check.
How to download an older version of any Creative Cloud app
Older versions of Creative Cloud software must be downloaded through the Creative Cloud Desktop app. See the official Adobe website: Install previous versions of your Creative Cloud apps. Just be careful to always open your project in the correct version. If you simply double-click on a project file, it might open in the wrong version. Avoid this by opening the correct program first then selecting the project under file / open project.
How to upload an After Effects project to an older version
Open your project in the After Effects version you used last. Open the file menu and select “Save As” and then “Save a copy as CC (##). This will create a new duplicate project file. This new file will open in previous versions of After Effects corresponding to the number you selected (ie “Save a copy as CC (15.x) …” will create a file that you can open in After Effects 2015 or earlier .
How to upload a Premiere project to an older version
Unfortunately, there is no official way to migrate a new project to an old version. Below are two workarounds for this issue.
XML
Open your Premiere project. Export each of your sequences as a Final Cut XML. If there are multiple strings, you’ll want to create a folder and name each individual XML in an organized way. Now open the previous version of Premiere and start a new project. Import all your XMLs and your sequences should appear exactly as in the previous project.
Unfortunately, this method does not take into account bins or other organization and project metadata. If you’re dealing with a larger, complicated project, an alternative method might be worth trying.
