Amazon is launching a new gift feature today, this will allow subscribers to your Prime service to send gifts to others using just an email address or phone number – address is not required.
Gift givers must be Amazon Prime members, the program is limited to the continental United States and can only be used in mobile devices for now. And even though Amazon has built in some safeguards – the giver never gets access to the recipient’s mailing address – it sounds like a bad idea that’s ready to be abused by scammers, stalkers and those who take delight in other people’s online harassment.
See how the new feature It works: the gift giver wants to surprise the recipient with a gift, but doesn’t know the recipient’s mailing address. The giver, however, has the recipient’s email address or phone number. The giver chooses the gift on his Amazon mobile application, selects the “add gift receipt for easy returns” options during checkout and you will see an option to “allow recipient to provide their address”. The donor then adds the recipient’s email address or mobile number.
At that point, the giver’s card is not charged, but a hold is placed on your payment card for the amount of the purchase.
The recipient then receives a notice – by text message or email – that there is a gift from the giver waiting for her. Please note that if the recipient does not have an Amazon account, they can create one at this time. The recipient must have an Amazon account to accept the gift, but only the giver must be a Prime member.
The recipient can click on Amazon’s notice to reveal what the gift giver has sent, then she can decide whether to decline the gift, accept the gift, but convert it into an Amazon gift certificate — the gift giver will not be notified — or, she you can simply accept the gift. But the idea of getting a gift from someone who doesn’t have your address is problematic; there may be a good reason why the recipient’s address is not known to the giver. If someone spams your phone or your inbox with multiple gift alerts, even if you don’t accept or decline them, will be up recipient to notify Amazon of the issue. Theoretically, since Prime members register their names, addresses and a payment method with Amazon, they wouldn’t risk having their account canceled by sending fake gifts. However, this is not a foolproof method to prevent harassment.
