Proton is a compatibility layer for Microsoft Windows games to run on Linux-based operating systems. Proton is developed by Valve in collaboration with developers CodeWeavers. It is a collection of software and libraries combined with a patched version of Wine to improve performance and compatibility with Windows games. Proton is designed for integration into the Steam client as “Steam Play”. It is officially distributed through the client, although third-party forks can be manually installed.
What is a proton compatibility layer?
First, to understand what Proton is, we need to understand two technologies, DirectX and Vulkan. Consider them a game driver. These are APIs for communicating with graphics cards on your computer. These are programming apps. While DirectX is a closed source API developed by Microsoft and Windows, Linux is using the open source Vulcan API. There are many other APIs such as OpenGL, but we will only focus on Vulkan and DirectX.
