How to automatically resize all columns to fit on Windows 11 – Guide

Windows 11 is available to everyone and it surprised me a lot, to say the least. We are a big fan of the updated, more minimalistic design. File Explorer has also been revamped, with a mixed color scheme instead of an all-white interface and a slimmer command bar.

In this article, we will explain the different ways to change the column size of File Explorer in Windows 11. By default, File Explorer is set to Details layout mode, which displays all folder details in columns. This column size can be changed in four main ways:

How to automatically resize all columns to fit in Windows 11

Select the option “Size all columns to fit”

Navigate to the folder where you want to resize the column and right-click the column header (top row) in any of them.

Now select “Size all columns by size” from the context menu options list.

All columns will now automatically resize in Windows 11 to match the length of the content below them, so everything is visible at a glance.

Select the “Column size to fit” option

Open the folder where you want to resize a specific column and right-click the column header for that column.

Now select ” Column Size by Size » from the context menu.

The selected column will now change while the others will not be affected.

Drag to increase column size

Navigate to the desired folder, move the cursor to the right of the column header and a small black line will appear with perpendicular arrows on either side.

Once that’s done, hold it and drag it in any direction to resize the column. Dragging right will increase the size and dragging left will decrease it.

Manually enter column width in pixels

Navigate to the folder where you want to resize the column and right-click the column header.

Then select ” Still » from the context menu.

Now enter the desired width in pixels (px) in the text box next to “Selected column width” and press “OK » Below to save your changes.
