How to Change the Google Assistant’s voice – Guide

Google’s version of Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri is Google Assistant. Since its launch in 2016, it has made incredible strides and is probably the most advanced and dynamic assistant on the market. Google has largely deployed Assistant, not just on its own hardware, but through partnerships with other companies that see Google Assistant on a range of devices, from fridges and headphones to speakers and cars.

The days of the monotonous robotic “virtual assistants” are quickly coming to an end. The “voices” your smart devices communicate with seem to be getting more subtle, realistic and recognizable with each update, and it’s no surprise that tech giant Google is leading the way in this area. Google’s virtual assistant, aptly named “Google Assistant”, currently has 10 voices (five male and five female), plus a celebrity voice spoken by television and film star Issa Rae.

Each voice has its own tone, character and personality, giving users more options than ever before to customize their devices. But how exactly can you change the Google Assistant voice? The good news is that the process is not complicated. It only takes a few steps, which vary slightly depending on the software, to access the virtual assistant.

How to Change Google Assistant Voice

  • Open up Google Home app on your smartphone or tablet. Select the Settings icon (looks like a gear) from the main menu.
  • If you prefer voice commands, you can also say “Ok Google, open Assistant settings” and your phone or tablet will automatically display the Settings screen on Google Home application.
  • Under Settings, scroll until you get to the Google Assistant section and select the option that says More Settings. On the next screen, look at the top menu and choose Wizard to gain access to the correct options.
  • Now select Assistant voice from the drop-down menu. You will then enter an interesting menu of different colored icons that you can scroll through. Select a color and you can hear a sample of the voice. There are different accents, as well as male and female voices, so scroll through until you find one you really like. You can simply close the app and Google Assistant will continue using that voice.
