How to Enable/Disable WiFi to connect over 5GHz in Windows 11/10 – Guide

These WiFi connections are typically 5GHz or 2.4GHz. These connections are different and not suitable for all devices. Your Windows 11 or 10 computer will generally connect at a higher strength to the WiFi network, rather than one that might be faster, for example B. 5 GHz. Fortunately, we can force our Windows 11 computer to always connect to the 5 GHz WiFi network.

How to Enable 5GHz WiFi in Windows 10

Inspect if your machine supports 5GHz WiFi

  • First, press the ‘Windows key + R’ combination simultaneously. After that, the ‘Run’ dialog will show up.
  • In the ‘Run’ dialog, type the ‘cmd’ command and press the ‘Enter’ key to open the ‘Command Prompt’ window.
  • Type ‘netsh wlan show drivers’ and to run it click ‘Enter’ button.
  • In the output, look for the heading ‘Supported Radio Types’. Under this heading, if there are three network modes- ‘802.11a 802.11g 802.11n’. These three modes allow your computer to support 2.4GHz and 5GHz bandwidths. If you get these network modes – ‘802.11g 802.11n’ and ‘802.11n 802.11g 802.11b’. So the computer only supports 2.4GHz bandwidth.

    • Check if your router supports 5GHz bandwidth

    To find out if your router supports 5GHz bandwidth, you need to do some internet research. The easiest way to find your router’s bandwidth is by looking at the packaging box in which the device came. Now, you can’t find the information, look on the back of your router device. Finally, go to the router manufacturer’s webpage and search for it.

    Enable 5GHz or 802.11n mode on the WiFi adapter

  • First, right click on ‘Windows Logo’ and then from the list of options choose ‘Device Manager’
  • In the ‘Device Manager’ window, locate the ‘Network adapters’ category. Then press the down arrow to expand this category. In this list, look for the ‘Wireless Adapter’ driver. Now select it and right click on the driver. In the pop-up options menuup, select the ‘Properties’ option.
  • Now, under ‘Wireless Adapter Properties’, locate the ‘Advanced’ tab. On this tab, under the heading ‘Properties’, search for ‘802.11n Mode’ and choose it. After that go to the ‘Value’ heading, select the ‘Enabled’ value from the dropdown menu.
  • Now tap ‘OK’ and restart your computer and see if you can see the 5GHz network.

    • Using Device Manager, set the bandwidth to 5GHz

  • Under ‘Wireless Adapter Properties’, locate and select the ‘Advanced’ tab. Now, under the ‘Property’ heading, look for the ‘Preferred Band’ property and select it. From the drop-down list under the ‘Value’ heading, choose the ‘Prefer 5.2 GHz band’ option. press the button ‘OK’.
  • Finally, restart the machine and check again if it can detect a 5GHz or 5G WiFi network.

    • Automatically update WiFi driver

  • First, press the Windows key and type device manager. Now from the search result select the ‘Device Manager’ option.
  • Within that window, find the ‘Network adapters’ category and then expand it. Now, in the expanded list, look for the ‘Wireless Adapter’ driver. Right-click on the driver and from the list of options select the ‘Update Driver Software’ option.
  • In the new window, select the first option ‘Search automatically for updated driver software’ to start the driver update process yourself.
  • After driver update, restart your machine and see if it can detect the 5GHz network.

    • Manually update the WiFi driver

    To manually update the WiFi driver, you can go to the manufacturer’s website. On this website, find the latest WiFi driver compatible with your operating system.

  • First, from the previous point, follow the first and second steps.
  • Now select the second option that says ‘Browse my computer for driver software’ in the next window.
  • After that, again in the new window, browse and select the folder where the WiFi driver software is installed. When you find this folder, click ‘Next’ button.
  • Now follow the information on the screen until the WiFi driver is fully installed.
  • Finally, restart your PC and see if you can enable 5GHz WiFi networking on it.

    • Roll back your WiFi driver update

  • From the third point, follow the first and second steps.
  • In the ‘Wireless Adapter’ ‘Properties’ window, locate and choose the ‘Driver’ tab. From this tab, choose ‘Roll Back Driver’ button. After clicking on it, follow the information on the screen and roll back the WiFi driver.
  • When finished, tap ‘OK’ and restart your computer to confirm the change.

    • Enable 5GHz WiFi on Windows 11

  • Press Win + X and select “Device Manager“.
  • Expand the “Network adapters” column and double-click the wireless adapter.
  • Go to the “Advanced” tab and find the value associated with 5GHz or 802.11a or 802.11ac.
  • The parameter can be named differently “Wireless mode”, “Preferred frequency”, “Preferred band”.
  • If there are no parameters available in the network module properties, to change WiFi to 5GHz you will need to find the VHT 2.4G parameter option and set the value to Disable (disabled).
