How to install fonts in Windows 11/10 PC – Guide

Especially if you are a designer who often works with Adobe Photoshop or Corel Draw. Fonts are the soul of a designer. If you are in the banner and poster printing business, then this will surely help your business. This is because fonts can embellish the results of the designs you work on. Windows default fonts are sometimes not enough to create a design, so we need to install or add new fonts. If you already have a collection of fonts, you can add them right away. Otherwise, you can search and download the fonts you want.

There are several sites that provide fonts for free, including Google Fonts, Da Fonts, FontSpace, FontFabric, and many other sites online that offer free fonts. In fact, Windows 11 already has a good collection of fonts. But since we don’t know the names of these fonts, we never use them.

How to install fonts on Windows 11/10 PC

The Microsoft Store is the most affordable way for most Windows users to install new fonts because it is a straightforward process that is unlikely to be used to install anything malicious on your system, which is not guaranteed when you are installing a font from a shady website, for example. Here it is how to install new fonts on Windows 11 through Microsoft Store.

  • Launch the Microsoft Store. Microsoft pins it to the Windows 11 taskbar and Start menu by default, but if you’ve removed it from both places, the quickest way to get to the market is to search for “Microsoft Store” in the Start menu.
  • Search for ‘Sources’ in the top search bar. A results menu will appear and “Sources” should be the main result. However, it’s easy to spot if it isn’t, because it has an elusive icon and the caption “Explore new sources”. Click.
  • Click on the ‘Explore New Fonts’ button button. Microsoft devotes a significant portion of this page to a curated selection of fonts, many of which were designed by Microsoft, so let’s start there.
  • Choose a font that interests you. In our case, we’re going to select “Convection” because it looks like a fun sans serif we might want in our collection, but the steps will be the same for whichever font you choose, so choose the option that catches your eye.
  • Click on the ‘Free’ button button. You don’t even need to sign in to the Microsoft Store to install free fonts; just click the “Free” button button. However, paid fonts require you to sign in to a Microsoft account and you will have to choose your payment method before confirming your purchase and installing the font you want to use.
  • Since the “Free” button changes to “Open”, you can use the font you chose. Note that clicking the “Open” button button will not actually see the source. It simply leads to the Personalization section of the Settings app, which is exactly where we would go next.

    • Install fonts through settings in Windows 11 or 10

    Installing fonts through Settings requires you to download a TrueType, OpenType, or PostScript file. Many websites offer a variety of free fonts, often user-created, and professionally designed fonts can be found in many markets. Google Fonts is one of the best. Just be careful where you choose to download something from to minimize your potential exposure to malicious files. With all that said, here it is how to install fonts through the Settings app built into Windows 11 and Windows 10.

  • Locate the downloaded font. Most browsers automatically save downloaded files in the Downloads folder, but if you set a custom destination, navigate to it using your preferred file manager. You can then leave that program window open or move the file to your desktop, which is what we did in the image below with Google’s Roboto font. Note that if your download is compressed (in a ZIP file perhaps) you will have to extract it.
  • Locate the downloaded font. Most browsers automatically save downloaded files in the Downloads folder, but if you set a custom destination, navigate to it using your preferred file manager. You can then leave that program window open or move the file to your desktop, which is what we did in the image below with Google’s Roboto font.
  • Navigate to the ‘Personalization’ page under Settings. The quickest way to do this is to right-click on the desktop and choose “Personalize” from the menu that appears. You can also navigate to it in the Settings app by clicking “Personalization” in the sidebar.
  • Select the ‘Fonts’ option. You may need to scroll, but there will be an option called “Fonts” with the caption “Install, Manage”. Clicking on it will bring up a page showing your installed fonts and, more importantly for our purposes, a way to add new ones.
  • Drag the downloaded font into the appropriate box under Settings. You can’t drag and drop the folder for some reason, but you can select multiple files inside the folder and drop them into the indicated area to install your new font.
  • Confirm that the font has been installed. The settings will automatically show the new font as the first item in the list of installed fonts below the drag and drop interface to confirm that it has been successfully installed. (The fonts will sort alphabetically again if you return to the page.) The app will also group multiple font faces, such as Roboto Bold or Roboto Italic, into a single font to prevent duplicates from getting cluttered up the list.
