How to install tvOS 15.2 developer beta 1 on your Apple TV – Guide
As with iOS and macOS, Apple makes beta versions of tvOS available for developers to test. But unlike beta versions for other systems, downloading and installing on Apple TV HD (4th generation) or Apple TV 4K is more complex than a simple download and move on. If you are a developer and you are having trouble installing tvOS beta, here is what you need to do.
Unlike other Apple operating systems, you cannot keep your Apple TV backed up; as such, Apple offers two options to update the tvOS: in addition to air, which just updates the system; and via USB-C, which restores the device to factory settings.
How to download beta version of the developer tvOS 15.2 on Apple TV HD and 4K
This process will only update the system software. Your apps and settings on your Apple TV should not be affected.
- Go to developer.apple.com on your Mac.
- Click Discover and select tvOS.
- Log in with your developer username and password.
- Scroll down and click on the Download button button to the right of the tvOS 15.2 beta configuration profile. Save to your desktop.
- Install the Apple Configurator app from the Mac App Store.
- Connect your 4th generation or 4K Apple TV to AC power and the same wireless network as your Mac.
- Open the latest version of Xcode on your Mac.
- On the Menu bar, click Window and select Devices and Simulators.
- Go to Settings on your Apple TV.
- Select Remotes & Devices.
- Select Remote Apps & Devices.
- In Xcode on your Mac, select your Apple TV as soon as it appears under Discovered in the left column.
- To pair Xcode with your Apple TV, enter the code that appears on your TV.
- Once paired, open the Apple Configurator on your Mac. If it’s your first setup up Apple TV, click Prepare and follow the onscreen instructions.
- If you have already defined up Apple TV and are now adding profiles, you need to click Add → Profiles.
- Alternatively, you can drag and drop the tvOS 15.2 configuration profile from your desktop onto the Apple TV icon in the Apple Configurator. This will set the Apple TV to tvOS 15.2.
Your Apple TV will then detect the new tvOS and download and install it like any other update.
Install the restore image from tvOS beta via USB-C (4th generation Apple TV only)
If you have a 4th generation Apple TV, you can use another method to install tvOS 15.2 beta.
Note: This process will reset your Apple TV to factory settings.
- Go to the developer’s download page on your Mac.
- Download the tvOS beta software restore image for Apple TV 4th generation.
- Launch Finder and connect your 4th generation Apple TV to your Mac with a USB-C cable.
- Select your Apple TV when it appears in the Finder.
- Press and hold the Option key and click Restore Apple TV button in the Summary panel.
- Select the tvOS beta software restore image you downloaded and click Open to start the installation.
- Once the beta is installed, your device will restart and will need a network connection to complete activation.
