Google Chrome is not open source and if you try to install Google Chrome from Ubuntu Software Center you will not find it there. It will likely suggest installing Chromium (the open source project from which Chrome is derived).

How to Install Google Chrome on Ubuntu Linux

Installing Google Chrome on Ubuntu is easy. All you need to do is download the package file from the official source and unzip it on your system. There are several ways to do this, using the dpkg package manager or with the help of an application manager software.

Command line installation with dpkg

Behind every package manager on Debian-based Linux distributions is a basic piece of software known as dpkg that is responsible for managing Debian packages. The other package managers used in Debian based distributions such as Apt only act as a front end for dpkg.

To install Google Chrome using the command line, first launch the terminal by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T.

Download the Chrome package using wget. This is a Linux utility that allows you to download files using HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and FTPS.

wget https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

You can install the downloaded package using dpkg or apt. Type one of the following commands in the terminal:

sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

sudo apt install ./google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

The system will ask for your user password for registration purposes. Type the password and press Enter.

Install Google Chrome Graphically

Using the command line can be uncomfortable for someone new to Linux. In this situation Ubuntu has Software Center application which will extract and install Google Chrome package automatically. To install Google Chrome using the Ubuntu Software Center:

Go to the Chrome download page.

Click Download Chrome button.

Under the label Please select your download package, check the 64-bit .deb option (For Debian/Ubuntu).

Select Accept and Install to continue.

Go to the directory where the downloaded package is located.

Double-click the .deb package to launch Software Center.

Click on the Install button button.

Enter your account password to start the installation process.

Google Chrome will be installed on your Ubuntu machine.
