How to Install LAMP Server on Amazon Linux 2 – Guide

Check your running operating system to verify that Amazon Linux 2 is running.

Install the lamp-mariadb10.2-php7.2 and php7.2 Amazon Linux Extras repositories to get the latest versions of the LAMP MariaDB and PHP packages for Amazon Linux 2.

sudo amazon-linux-extras install -y lamp-mariadb10.2-php7.2 php7.2

Install Apache web server, MariaDB and PHP software packages.

sudo yum install -y httpd mariadb-server

The Apache web server will be installed in /var/www/html

You can get information about installed packages by running.

# delicious information [package-name]

yum info httpd

yum info mariadb.x86_64

Start the Apache web server process.

sudo systemctl start httpd

Check if the Apache web server process is running.

sudo systemctl status httpd

Configure the Apache web server to start on every system boot.up.

sudo systemctl enable httpd

You can verify that httpd is enabled by running the following command.

sudo systemctl is enabled httpd

Go to the EC2 security group and allow inbound traffic on port 80, using the TCP protocol.

# Port 80 = Unsecured web traffic (HTTP)

Open your web browser and make sure your Apache server is up and running.

Remember, your apache is configured to read the contents of /var/www/html

If this directory is empty you will see an Apache test page, this still checks as a working Apache server

AWS Doc Notes: Apache httpd provides files that are kept in a directory called the Apache document root. The Amazon Linux Apache document root is /var/www/html, which by default belongs to the root.

To work in this directory you will need to add the currently logged in user (in this case ec2-user) to the apache group.

Check if the apache group exists.

cat /etc/group | grep apache

Add ec2-user to the apache group.

sudo usermod -a -G apache ec2-user

If you run man usermod, the combination of -a (append) and -G (groups), will add the ec2 user to the apache group.

Check if user ec2 has been added to the group and check if user ec2 has the group added to himself.

cat /etc/group | grep apache

groups

You will need to log out of the system for the ec2 user to be updated to the new group. You can see that it’s not currently added by running:

After logging out and back in, check if the system has ec2-user in the apache group.

Currently, the apache directory /var/www/html is owned by root user and group. Change this so the group ownership is apache and the user is ec2-user.

sudo chown -R ec2-user:apache /var/www/

To add group write permissions and set group ID in future subdirectories, change directory permissions of /var/www and its subdirectories.

sudo chmod 2775 /var/www && find /var/www -type d -exec sudo chmod 2775 {} ;

To add group write permissions, recursively change the file permissions of /var/www and its subdirectories.

find /var/www -type f -exec sudo chmod 0664 {} ;

Now ec2-user (and any future members of the apache group) can add, delete and edit files in the Apache document root, allowing you to add content such as a static website or PHP application.

Create a PHP file in the Apache document root (to test your LAMP server).

echo “” > /var/www/html/phpinfo.php

Check that the phpinfo.php file has been added to the /var/www/html directory.

Go to your web browser and visit the DNS URL and add the following: /phpinfo.php to the final.

[http://my.public.dns.amazonaws.com/]phpinfo.php

If you are still having problems and have already verified that the /phpinfo.php file exists, make sure you have installed the packages.

sudo yum list installed httpd mariadb-server php-mysqlnd

If any are missing, just install them: sudo yum install [package-name].

Once everything is working, remove the file and make sure it has been deleted.

rm /var/www/html/phpinfo.php

ls -l /var/www/html
