You can limit Windows Update download speed in Windows 10. For some apps, you can also limit bandwidth. However, for applications where this is not possible, you need third-party software. Limiting bandwidth can be useful in many circumstances. For example, if you’re downloading (or uploading) a large file, limiting your browser’s available bandwidth can be useful to ensure that other applications don’t slow down too much.

If you use other bandwidth intensive apps, limiting them can ensure that you can browse and watch videos unhindered. Here’s how these options work when built into an app, as well as some third-party tools you can use for apps that don’t support them.

How to Limit Bandwidth for Some Apps in Windows 10

To limit bandwidth to select applications on Windows, we will use a third-party application called Net Balancer. The free or unregistered version of this app is able to limit up to three processes at any point in time, which is good enough for most home Commercial.

  • To get started, go to the official website and download the NetBalancer app. Once downloaded, install it like any other software.
  • As the application installs its own drivers, you will lose your internet connectivity after installation, so make sure you have saved all your work before installing the program and restart your system after installation.
  • After restarting, launch the program using the shortcut on the desktop or in the Start menu. Once launched, the app may ask if you want to set some predefined network priorities. Just click on button “Not yet. You can always set the preset priorities later.
  • In the main window, the first thing you need to do is filter the processes that are connected to the Internet. To do this, click on the “Show online processes only” icon in the upper right corner.
  • You can also click on the “Download rate” section to sort the whole process according to how much bandwidth you are using.
  • Once you find the target process you want to limit bandwidth for, right click on it and select low, normal, or high priority. This action will limit the amount of bandwidth the process can use.
  • If you want to set a precise limit of the target process, select the “Limit” option from the context menu.
  • The above action will open the “Edit Priority” window. Here enter the limit rate in KB/s and click the OK button button to save the changes.
  • You can also set the upload priority by changing the Upload Priority status to “Limited”.
  • Once the threshold is set, the target process cannot exceed the threshold unless you change or remove the threshold.
  • If you want to remove the threshold, simply change the Priority status from “Limit” to “Normal” in the Edit Priority window.
  • If for some reason the application cannot detect your network card, click on the “Edit” option that appears on the top navigation bar and select “Network Adapters”.
  • Once the Network Adapters window opens, select the network adapters you want to monitor and click the “Ok” button button to save the changes.
