How To make an Animated GIF from Video – Guide
The GIF format isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The three-decade format of light, looped, soundless animation has taken on a new lease of life with the rise of social media and memes. There are superior animation capture formats, but none are as widely used.
To produce a GIF on your PC or Mac, you don’t need any special software. All you need is your iPhone to get started. While there are several ways to produce a GIF on your iPhone, these three should serve most of your purposes.
Save Live Photos as GIFs
Live photos capture a few seconds of animation on each side of the photo you took. Keep them pressed and you can see the animation. To capture Live Photos, press the concentric circles at the top of the camera application.
You can turn them into GIFs using the Photos app that came pre-installed on your iPhone.
1. Open the Photos app and find the live photo you want to turn into a GIF. You can find them easily by choosing Albums at the bottom of the app, scrolling down to the Media Types list. Live Photos will be one of the selections.
2. Once your live photo is selected, drag it up. You’ll see a list of effects, a map showing where the photo was taken, and related image categories.
3. Select Loop or Bounce animation.
That’s all you need to do! If you open the Share menu to send the GIF in an email or use in a Tweet, it will send it as GIF. Back in the Albums screen, under the Media Types heading, you’ll see Animated as one of the options. You can find all the Live Photos you turned into GIFs there.
Use a shortcut to create GIFs from videos or burst photos
If you hold the shutter button on your iPhone camera application, you will get a very fast succession of still images at full resolution. It’s not as smooth as a Live Photo, but the images are much higher quality and you can keep shooting for several seconds.
There’s no built-in way to turn a snapshot into a GIF, but you can do it easily with the Shortcuts app.
1. Make sure you have the Shortcuts app.
2. Download this Convert Burst to GIF shortcut.
3. Run the shortcut. It will show a list of all your burst photos. Select one and wait a few seconds while it changes to GIF.
4. Select Done and you will be asked to Share o GIF or Save to Photos.
Want to do the same thing with a video instead of a photo burst? Try this.
1. Take this video to GIF shortcut.
2. Run it. You will see a list of eligible videos (longer than a second and not a live photo).
3. Video too long? No problem – an editing window will appear up to let you collapse just the part you want to make a GIF of.
4. Press Save. Then press the share button button at the top of the screen to save the image or send it to a social media app, email, messaging, or other service.
Use an app like Giphy
Of course, there are other ways to make GIFs. Apps dedicated to creating GIFs let you record new videos, add stickers, AR text and effects, and much more.
One of our favorites is Giphy. It allows you to browse and share the site’s huge library of GIFs, extract images or videos from your phone library, or record and edit new videos. Giphy used to have a separate app for all things GIF creation (Giphy Cam), but it hasn’t been updated since 2017. Since then, all its features have been included in the main Giphy app.
