How To Partition USB Drives in Windows 11 – Guide

Would you like to partition your USB drive using the disk management tool built into Windows 10? Need to make multiple partitions on a USB drive? This is the way to segment a USB drive in Creators Update or more ways in Windows 10. In Windows 10 Anniversary Update and earlier Windows 10 variants, Windows did not allow customers to distribute USB drives from Disk Management . While it was generally possible to make multiple pieces on internal drives via Disk Management, distributing the USB drive was impractical. We needed to use the command prompt or third-party software to create extra segments on a USB drive.

How to create multiple partitions on a usb flash drive?

  • Backup your important flash drive data before proceeding with the steps. During partitioning, all data stored on the flash drive will be deleted. When ready, perform the following steps to create multiple partitions on your USB drive (flash drive):-
  • Connect your USB flash drive to your PC.
  • Now click on Search button on the taskbar and type Create and format hard disk partitions in the search box.
  • Click on its entry in the top search results to open the Disk Management tool.
  • In the Disk Management window, you will find a removable disk entry.
  • Right-click on the right side panel of the removable disk entry and select the Delete volume option.
  • Click Yes when the “Delete Simple Volume” dialog opens.
  • Now, next to the removable one, you will see the “Unallocated” space.
  • Now the USB flash drive is empty and you need to create partitions on it. To do this, right-click on the unallocated space and select the New Simple Wizard option.
  • click next button when the “New Simple Volume Wizard” window opens.
  • Then set the size of the first partition in megabytes (MB) next to the “Single volume size in MB” option.
  • Click Next.
  • Select a drive letter from the drop-down list next to “Assign the following drive letter” or leave it as the default. Windows automatically assigns a free drive letter when you create a new partition.
  • Click Next.
  • Here, select “File System” and “Allocation Unit Size” from the drop-down menu or leave the Windows default. Finally, check the option Perform a quick format. Then click Next button to format it and make it usable.
  • Click Finish.
  • When formatting is complete, you will see that the USB flash drive is split into two parts: one with a drive letter and the other as unallocated.
  • To make another partition, right-click the unallocated space again and select New Simple Partition.
  • Click Next.
  • Click Next.
  • Set the partition size in megabytes (MB) next to “Single volume size in MB”.
  • Select a drive letter from the “Assign the following drive letter” drop-down menu or leave it as the default. Windows automatically assigns the next free drive letter when we create a new partition.
  • Select “File System” and “Allocation Unit Size” from the drop-down menu or leave the Windows default.
  • Finally, check the option Perform a quick format and click on the Next button button to format the new partition.
  • Click Finish button when formatting is complete.

    • You need to repeat the steps above to create multiple partitions.

    How to password protect a usb flash drive?

    To password protect your important partition with BitLocker, do the following:-

  • Open Control Panel.
  • Select Category from the “View by” drop-down menu.
  • Click on the System and Security category.
  • Click BitLocker Drive Encryption.
  • In the “BitLocker Drive Encryption” window, in the “Removable Data Drives – BitLocker to Go” section, expand the partition you want to protect with BitLocker.
  • Click Turn on BitLocker.
  • Select the Use a password to unlock the drive checkbox and set the desired password.
  • Click Next.
  • Click Save to a file.
  • Select the desired location on your PC to store the encrypted password to recover data from the drive in case you forget it.
  • Click Save.
  • Click Next.
  • Select Encrypt only used disk space (faster and better for new PCs and drives.
  • Click Next.
  • Select compatibility mode (best for drives that can be moved from this device).
  • Click Next.
  • Click Start Encryption.
  • Click Close.
