The other day I was working on a presentation. I tried to find a way to add a logo and some icons in PowerPoint, but there was a problem. All the images had different background colors and I needed them all to look the same. Maybe you’ve already been there. You have a logo, icon, or other image that you want to create, but you need to remove the background from the image. You may need to add your company logo to a new image or add an icon to a PowerPoint presentation.

You can make the background of an image transparent using an advanced photo editor such as Photoshop, TechSmith Snagit, or a variety of other tools. Fortunately, regardless of the tool used, the approach is similar.

How to Remove a photo background in PowerPoint

Keep in mind that you’ll need to use Office 2010 or later, and since PowerPoint isn’t as sophisticated as Photoshop, it might not work for some of the more difficult images. But if you don’t have Photoshop access, it might be just what you need.

Insert the image into PowerPoint.

Images with white/solid backgrounds or images that have high contrast to the foreground are the easiest to manipulate in PowerPoint.

  • First, click on your image. Then under ‘Picture Format’ on a Mac (or ‘File’ on a PC) in the toolbar choose ‘Remove Background’.
  • PowerPoint will automatically attempt to remove the background, but it may not get it right.
  • Using the options on the toolbar, click to mark the areas you want to keep or remove from final cropped image.
  • First, drag the box around the image so that it includes the entire area of ​​the image you want to keep.
  • Keep in mind that the areas highlighted in purple will be removed. Using the cursor, however, can be even more precise about what you want to eliminate. Mouse over the purple background and subject in your photo – you’ll see that the cursor will produce either a plus sign or a minus sign. The minus sign, when hovering over the subject, allows you to mark the areas to be removed – just click on the additional areas you want to remove.
  • If there are purple areas you really want to keep, hover over any purple dots and click to mark the areas to keep – they will feature a plus sign.
  • To take a closer look at the areas you want to select, zoom in on the image. Below, you’ll see little minus signs around the areas of the girl’s hair – I clicked on those spots where I thought PowerPoint might get confused about which parts of the background between the hairs should go or go.
  • PowerPoint could see these strands of hair as the girl’s edge, and not remove the background between that hair and the rest of her head. In this type of case, these negative signs can help you.
  • If you happen to include or exclude something by mistake, just click the plus or minus sign that covers the area and it will disappear.
  • Click somewhere outside the image when finished. Last but not least, save the image as a PNG file to preserve its transparent background.
