When you connect a removable drive or memory card to a Windows 11 PC, AutoPlay will ask you how you want Windows to access or play the material on the drive. Here it is how to disable autoplay or adjust its operation.

  • When the settings open, click “Bluetooth & Devices” in the sidebar and select “AutoPlay.”
  • In the AutoPlay settings, you can configure how AutoPlay works or disable it completely. To turn off autoplay, change the switch in “Use autoplay for all media and devices” to “Off”.
  • If you don’t mind using AutoPlay, but want to change the way it handles removable drives and memory cards, find the “Choose AutoPlay Defaults” section, which contains two drop-down menus.
  • If you click on the menu under “Removable Drive”, you will see the following options (and possibly others, depending on the programs you have installed.
  • Configure storage settings (settings): This takes you to the storage settings in the Windows Settings app.
  • Take no action: This means nothing AutoPlay related will happen when you plug in the drive, but you can still find it in File Explorer as usual.
  • Open folder to view files (File Explorer): This will automatically open the removable drive you just connected in a File Explorer window.

  • Import photos and videos (OneDrive): Copy photos and videos from your memory card to the OneDrive cloud storage space.
  • Play (Windows Media Player): This will automatically play the media files that Windows finds on the memory card in Windows Media Player application.
  • Take no action: Autoplay will not be activated when you insert a memory card.
  • Open folder to view files (File Explorer): This will show the files stored on the memory card in a File Explorer window.
  • Always Ask: Ask how you would like to handle the memory card each time you insert it.

    • Choose the option that matches your personal preference.
