How to run File Explorer as an administrator on Windows 11 PC – Guide

When you start an application by selecting the “Run as administrator” option, the application starts with administrator rights. This makes it possible to make changes that would otherwise not be possible with standard / restricted authorizations. The app can now access restricted parts of the system and make changes to them. There are many things around the concept that most users are not aware of. Let’s discuss this before moving on to the methods of running as an administrator on Windows 11.

In the beginning, Windows had applications with system-wide files or settings. As this setting was a security risk, Microsoft integrated User Account Control into later versions of Windows. This security function asks you to obtain final consent just before an application with admin rights starts. If you try to run a program application from a non-administrator account, the UAC prompt will be triggered and you will be prompted for the administrator password. The program will not start without the administrator password.

Run the program as administrator on Windows 11

Using Windows Search

  • Press – Windows + S.
  • Enter the name of the application you want to start as an administrator.
  • Right click on the same result and choose – Run as administrator.
  • You can also click the “Run as administrator” option immediately in the right pane of the Best Match flyout.
  • Finally, allow User Account Control to appear by clicking – Yes.

    • By keyboard shortcut

  • Click on the search icon on the taskbar.
  • Write down the name of the application you want to run as an administrator.
  • When you see the desired item at the top, press – Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
  • This will bring up the User Account Control prompt.
  • To consent at the prompt, click – Yes.

    • Through the Run dialog

  • Press – Windows + R.
  • In the name of the text field of the executable file or shortcut of a tool or setting.
  • Press – Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
  • When User Account Control asks for permission, click – Yes.

  • Click Start button on the taskbar or simply press – the Windows key.
  • Click – All apps.
  • In the list, find the application you want to open with administrator privileges.
  • When found, right click on it and select – Run as administrator.
  • Give UAC permission by clicking – Yes.

    • Using desktop shortcut

  • Go to the desktop. To do this, press – Windows + D.
  • Right-click the application shortcut you want to open with the administrator right and select – Run as administrator.
  • Finally, click on – Yes to bring up User Account Control.

    • From the taskbar shortcut

  • Hover your mouse pointer over the taskbar and locate the application you want to open as an administrator.
  • Press the Ctrl+Shift keys together and click the application icon on the taskbar as well.
  • When the UAC dialog box is displayed up, select – Yes.

    • Using CMD Command Prompt

    Before running an application as an administrator through Command Prompt, you must first start the command-line utility with administrative privileges. Although the entire procedure takes longer than others, it works perfectly.

  • In Windows Search, type -cmd.
  • Press – Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
  • To consent to User Account Control, click – Yes.
  • When the command prompt shows up, enter the full path of the program you want to run as an administrator.
  • To get the path, enter the application name in Windows search.
  • When the result shows up, right-click the application and choose – Open file location.
  • On site, click on Home File Explorer menu and select – Copy path.
  • Return to the command prompt and right-click anywhere.
  • Hit – Enter.
  • If a UAC prompts you for the administrator password, provide it and press – Enter.

    • By context menu

  • Press – Windows + E.
  • In File Explorer, visit the directory where the application you want to start with administrator right is installed.
  • Right-click the application’s executable file and choose – Run as administrator.

    • Through Task Manager

  • Press Win + X and choose – Task Manager.
  • If the tool shows up in compact view, click – More details.
  • From the menu bar, click File => Run New Task.
  • In the text field provided, enter the path to the program.
  • You can also click Browse button to search for the desired path.
  • Select the checkbox present before – Create this task with administrative privileges.
  • Finally, click – OK.

    • From the File Explorer

  • Open File Explorer by pressing the shortcut key – Windows + E.
  • Navigate to the directory where you will get the main program executable.
  • Select the desired application exe file.
  • From the menu bar, go to the application’s Tools tab.
  • Click – Run as administrator icon.
  • Give consent to User Account Control, press – Yes.
