How to send a file through AirDrop from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac – Guide

AirDrop simplifies the wireless transfer of files, photos and movies between iPhone and Mac. AirDrop can also be used to exchange files with friends and family who have an Apple device and are within range. Here it is how to turn on AirDrop and use it to send files from iPhone to Mac and vice versa.

AirDrop creates a WiFi network between two Apple devices via Bluetooth. To use AirDrop, you’ll need two Apple devices that are within range of Bluetooth, which Apple claims is about 30 feet (30 feet). Both devices must have Bluetooth and WiFi turned on, as well as AirDrop turned on.

How to turn on airdrop

For successful AirDrop, you will need to enable AirDrop on Mac – you only need to do this once – and then you can send files from your iPhone quickly and easily.

  • Open the Finder and, in the upper left corner of the side panel, click on “AirDrop”. With the Finder open, you can also click “Go” in the taskbar at the top of the screen and then click “AirDrop” in the drop-down menu.

  • On the General page, select “AirDrop”.
  • On the AirDrop page, choose who you want to be discovered by by selecting either “Contacts Only” or “All”. Limiting AirDrop to just your contacts is safer, but choosing “all” is more convenient if you need to frequently receive files from many different people.
  • If you choose “everyone”, please be aware that if you are working in a public place, anyone in your neighborhood can send files to you, so be careful who accepts AirDrop files.

    Once AirDrop is enabled on your iPhone or iPad and Mac, you can go ahead and run AirDrop on the file.

  • On your iPhone, open the app you want to AirDrop. To send a photo, for example, open Photos.
  • Select the file or photo you want to upload (you can select more than one at a time).
  • Tap “Share” button, which looks like a box with an arrow pointing out of it, then tap the AirDrop icon, which should appear first in the list of app icons.
  • On the AirDrop screen, you should see icons for all AirDrop-compatible devices in range (it may take a while for them to appear). Tap the icon of the Mac you want to send the file to. The icon will say “Uploaded” when it finishes uploading the files.

  • You should see a notification appear on your desktop or device screen. Choose “Accept” or, if it’s a photo, you can also choose “Open in Photos”.
  • If you choose “Accept”, the file will appear in the Downloads folder. If you choose “Open in Photos”, the file will open in the Photos app.
