How to Set up a Desktop Environment/GUI on Ubuntu – Guide

Want to install a graphical user interface on your Ubuntu server? In most cases, this is quite possible, and we will explain the steps in detail in this section. tutorial. If you compare Ubuntu Desktop to Server, the main difference is the lack of a GUI i.e. a desktop environment in Server edition.

Ubuntu Server is basically a stripped down version of Ubuntu Desktop without the graphical modules. This is by design. A Linux server must use system resources to run services. The graphical desktop environment consumes a lot of system resources, and for this reason, server operating systems do not include a desktop environment by default. You can use an Ubuntu server with 512MB of RAM, but an Ubuntu desktop requires at least 2GB of RAM to function reasonably.

This is considered a waste of resources in the server world. As a server user (or system administrator) you are expected to use and manage your system from the command line. For this, you must have a good knowledge of Linux commands.

How to To define up a desktop/GUI environment on Ubuntu

Update repositories and packages

  • Start by updating the repositories and package lists:
  • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
  • Press Y and press Enter when asked if you want to continue.
  • Then install the tasksel manager utility:
  • sudo apt-get install tasksel

    • Select a Display Manager

  • To install a specific display manager, use the apt-get package manager:
  • To install SLiM:
  • sudo apt-get install slim
  • To install LightDM:
  • sudo apt-get install lightdm

    • Choose a GUI for your server

    GNOME

  • To install GNOME, start by starting tasksel:
  • A colorful interface will launch. Use the arrow key to scroll the list and find the Ubuntu desktop.
  • Use the Space key to select it, press Tab to select OK at the bottom and press Enter.
  • The system will install the software and reboot, providing a graphical login screen generated by your default display manager. In our case it is SLiM.
  • Enter your login credentials. Use F1 to switch between GUIs if you have multiple interfaces installed.

    • KDE Plasma

  • To install KDE Plasma, use the following Linux command:
  • sudo apt-get install kde-plasma-desktop
  • You may be prompted during installation to select a default display manager. Use the arrow keys to make a selection and press Enter.
  • Start KDE Plasma with the command:
  • sudo service display_manager start
  • Instead of display_manager, enter the name of the display manager you installed (eg SLiM, lightDM, SDDM). Enter your credentials and login.

    • Mate Core Server Desktop

  • Mate is a popular and lightweight GUI. Install it by running the following command:
  • sudo tasksel install ubuntu-mate-core
  • Wait for tasksel to complete the action. Once completed, launch the desktop interface with the command:
  • sudo service display_manager start
  • Instead of display_manager, enter the name of the display manager you installed (eg SLiM, lightDM, SDDM). You will be prompted to login.
  • To exit the GUI, open the command line and type:
  • sudo display_manager service stop

    • Lubuntu Core Server Desktop

  • Lubuntu is a very lightweight GUI. Use this application if you need a graphical interface but want to minimize the impact on system memory and processor.
  • To install Lubuntu, enter the following:
  • sudo tasksel install lubuntu-core
  • Alternatively, you can install from the tasksel menu with the command:
  • Use the arrow keys to highlight the Lubuntu GUI you want to use. Press Spacebar to select and then Tab for OK button button and press Enter.
  • Start the GUI with:
  • sudo service display_manager start
  • Exit the GUI by opening a terminal window and typing the following:
  • sudo display_manager service stop

    • Xubuntu Server Main Desktop

  • Xubuntu is an Ubuntu derivative that uses the Xfce desktop environment.
  • Install Xubuntu by typing the following:
  • sudo tasksel install xubuntu-core
  • Start it by typing:
  • sudo service display_manager start

    • Xfce Desktop

  • The Xfce desktop environment can be used alone. It is designed to be responsive, lightweight and easy to use.
  • Install Xfce with the following:
  • sudo apt-get install xfce4 slim
  • Start Xfce by typing:

    • Switching between GUIs

  • If you have multiple GUIs installed, you can select which one to use. After starting your display manager, you will be asked to login. However, this screen also lets you choose which GUI you want to activate.
  • Switch between GUIs by pressing F1. The interface will switch between sessions (or GUIs). Log in as soon as you switch to the GUI of your choice.
