How to set up and use Plex Media Server from any device – Guide
Paying more for a streaming service like Netflix or Spotify can seem like a waste when you already own a lot of movies digitally or on DVD or Blu-ray. However, this collection doesn’t mean you have to give up the convenience of streaming. Plex Media Server is an excellent home theater service that streams your movies and music to a variety of devices, including smart TVs, set-top boxes, game consoles and smartphones. It presents your media in an attractive, easy-to-navigate interface that also displays graphics, reviews, and other information about your media.
You can start watching a movie or TV show on one device, pause it and choose up right where you left off on another device. Best of all, the service is free, but there’s a premium version with more options if that’s what you want. Visit the official Plex website and download the desired version. With Plex, you can choose from many different platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux, and FreeBSD, as well as network-attached storage platforms like Netgear and Western Digital.
You must download the app for each device you plan to use, but it’s a good idea to start with your main computer first. Plex allows you to store media files in a single location (using “Plex Media Server”) and share them with any other device on the same network. The other device can play the shared media by streaming it from the media server (using “Plex Media Player”).

Run the program and start your Plex account
After the installation is complete, click “start” and the Plex software will direct you to a new browser window to create your account. You can actually run Plex with “limited functionality” by skipping this step, but as the website says, you won’t get the same features and your streaming may be less secure.
add your libraries
The Plex website will guide you through the process of adding media. Just click Add Library to import the files you want, from movies to music and photos. The syncing process may take a while, but you can click Next and continue using the program while it works. Then you can choose whether or not to send usage data to Plex. You can also get the apps for your other devices if you haven’t already.
Identify your servers and enable remote access
Once you are logged in, you may notice an alert in the left menu asking you to claim your current network. Click on it to save the network and identify it.
You will also see an alert next to the Remote Access tab. Click here and then click the orange Enable Remote Access button. You can now use Plex to access the server from other devices and disable it at any time.
Install your channels
Now you should see your beautiful home page with the menu on the side. Click on the Channels section and you can add media sources by simply clicking on Install Channels.
