How to use FaceTime links to call Android or Windows users – Guide
FaceTime was one of the highlights features when Steve Jobs introduced iOS 4 (renamed the iPhone OS!) at WWDC in 2010. Jobs envisioned this as the gold standard for video conferencing. “We’re going to start going to standardization bodies tomorrow.” He also stated, “Let’s make FaceTime an open industry standard.”
It didn’t work out exactly like that, as we all know. For nearly a decade, FaceTime has been an Apple exclusive feature, but iOS 15 (along with iPadOS 15 and macOS Monterey) does away with that. You could face FaceTime with people using Windows or Android PCs phones for the first time.
Apple, on the other hand, is not making FaceTime software available to them. Instead, you’ll be able to link to a FaceTime call, which you can attach to upcoming calendar appointments, share on Slack or via SMS, or do anything else you want. Anyone with a Windows or Android PC phone (or Linux box or whatever) will be able to join the call by opening it in their web browser, and the link developer must allow them to do this.
So while an Apple device is still required to initiate a FaceTime conversation and must act as a “host” to allow others to participate, you can at least communicate between devices. The new FaceTime connections feature works as follows.
Creating a FaceTime Link
Before you can chat with someone using Windows or Android, you need to create a link for that person to join.
- Open the FaceTime app on your iPhone or iPad
- Tap Create Link
- The sharing page will open. You can tap Copy to copy the link and paste it wherever you like, or choose an app or person to share it with.
- When finished, you will see the FaceTime Link in the main history list under “Upcoming” links.
The call hasn’t started yet, and it won’t be until you tap the next “FaceTime Link” link and then tap “Join” in the upper-right corner.
tap the information button (i) in the call if you need to share the link again or if you want to delete it. The link should remain active until manually removed so you can add it to a calendar event a month from now or schedule a FaceTime call for Mother’s Day next year.
Removing a FaceTime Link
Those FaceTime Link links remain until you delete them, which isn’t too bad. It allows you to create a call for a future date, even if it is only used by Apple devices.
To delete a future FaceTime Link call, just:
- Swipe left on the event.
- Tap Delete.
- A confirmation message appears. up, letting you know that the link will no longer work for the people you sent it to. Tap Delete link to confirm.
Chat with Android or Windows users
Anyone logging into an Android phone or the Windows PC will go to the default browser, where it will enter a FaceTime progressive web application in the browser window. It works great, but of course, with limited options and features.
When these users join the call, they first need to enter a name to use during the call. Importantly, they don’t need an Apple ID.
After the Windows / Android user enters their name, the Apple user who created the link will receive a notification that the person is waiting to join. While waiting for you to touch the button button to admit it, they won’t see the content of the call, just a “wait to be let in” message with their own live video.
Once you allow the person in, you will chat like a normal video call, although Windows / Android users don’t have as many options. You can switch cameras and use an external microphone or headphones, or change the view if more than one person is on the call. You will also be able to share the link with anyone you wish to invite.
When the call ends, you can press End or the person on the other end can tap Exit.
