How to Backup data using Syncback
Download and install Syncback. When starting the tool for the first time, a dialog window will appear asking you to create a new profile. Click “Yes” button. There are now three profile types available. Backup, Sync and Group. Select the first one, ie Backup. New profile window will appear up. Give your profile a name. For example, I named my new profile “Data Backup”. A profile configuration window will appear. Here you will see the Source and Directory fields at the top. On the right side there is a browser button (not shown in the image below). Click on this browser button to select your source and destination folder. For example, I want to back up a folder called “test” on my computer’s D drive. So I browsed through it and selected it as Source. Now I selected drive H as destination, which is an external drive connected to my PC.
In the Sub-dirs field, I selected “Include all subdirectories and their files (and use directory filter)” because I want to backup all folders present in the “test” folder. You may notice an expert button which will show you some advanced options for backing up your drive. By using this you can also backup your data to an FTP server.
The following is the screenshot of the tFTP tab that appeared when I clicked on “Expert” button. Here you must fill in all the correct settings for your FTP server. You can also test the FTP setup by clicking “Test FTP setup” button provided at the bottom. If you don’t want to backup the FTP server, uncheck the option “Destination directory is on an FTP server”.
After filling in all the profile settings, click “OK” button present in the lower right corner. It will ask for your confirmation for the simulated execution. The simulated run will produce a detailed report on which file will be copied and deleted after the profile backup runs.
How to schedule your backup
You can also schedule your daily, weekly or monthly backup using this tool. It will automatically backup/synchronize data at specified day and time. Open Syncback again. Now press “Ctrl + M” buttons keyboard to modify the profile configuration page. Go to expert configuration mode by clicking on “Expert” button. Now open the Misc tab. Here you will find a great “Schedule” button. Click on it.
A small confirmation window will appear. Click “Yes” to create a schedule. A warning window will appear. You need to set a password to run your scheduled task. On the “Task” tab, click on “Set password” button. Enter your Windows password. Also, check the box next to “Run only if connected”. Now go to the programming tab and select the task.
How to Restore a backup
Restoring your backup is an easy process. Open the program, right click on the profile. Select the “Restore” option from the context menu. A warning window will appear. It simply says that restore swaps source and destination directories. This means that all files in the source directory will be replaced with those in the destination directory and vice versa. Click “Yes” button for quick restoration.
