What do you need to download Windows 11

Before starting to download Windows 11, make sure you have the correct PC hardware. While we don’t think there’s much risk in downloading and installing Windows 11, there’s always the risk that something will go wrong. take a moment and come back up critical files on an external hard drive or in the cloud before proceeding. Also, make sure you understand that Windows 11 Home will require a Microsoft account to administer. If you have a Windows 10 Pro account and upgrade to Windows 11 Pro, you can use a local account (or as Microsoft now calls it, “offline”). To upgrade to Windows 10 Pro and then to Windows 11 Pro, the simplest way is to go to the Microsoft Store and upgrade to Windows 10 Pro before starting the upgrade. We would say that allocating from 30 minutes to an hour seems right, but it can be very variable. Plan to have at least 9GB of free space available to download Windows 11 and make sure your PC is up so far, with Windows 10 Version 2004 or higher installed. Microsoft would like to let you know that there are serious risks in doing this, and instead recommends upgrading to Windows 11 on supported hardware through Windows Update (our first choice below). To continue using Registry Editor and install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, follow these steps. (If you’re not sure what to do or don’t want to risk your PC, don’t do it!)

This method allows your PC to bypass the TPM 2.0 check as well as the required CPU family and model. You can also directly apply a Windows 11 image installation to disk. Doing this through Microsoft’s DISM command-line tool will also bypass TPM/CPU checking, Microsoft says.

Installing Windows 11 through Windows Update is an “in-place” or “incremental” installation, where Windows 11 code is essentially added to a PC with existing applications and documents. It’s a safe approach as long as you’ve supported up your existing files. (Again: Back up your computer before you update your operating system!) Windows 11 should also allow you to “roll back” to Windows 10 within a period of time (usually ten days) if you just don’t like it.

A “clean install” gives you the option to start from scratch and that’s typically what the other installation options below offer. In the case of Windows 11, you should strongly consider this option. Windows 11 is not optimized and we found more than a few bugs. It also seems a little slow. A clean install helps eliminate some of these bugs.

A clean install usually means cleaning your documents, applications and settings from your PC and starting from scratch. That’s where the cloud helps. If your documents are stored on OneDrive (or Box, Dropbox, an external drive, whatever), you can simply copy them back. You will need to download and reinstall apps and games, however, as well as fix them. Remember, if you upgrade to Windows 11, let the ten-day grace period expire, and then decide to go back to Windows 10, you can – you’ll just have to download and install a clean copy. (Do not use an external hard drive for this as the tool requires you to format or erase the entire drive first. Downloading an ISO image, the next option, solves this problem.)

For this you will need a DVD and DVD burner, or a USB key with at least 8 GB or more. It may be necessary to use a dual-layer DVD. You can then tell Windows to download the file to the USB key or as an ISO file to burn to DVD. You will be able to select the language, edition and architecture (choose 64-bit option) and then the procedure will begin.

Once the media tool is created, you will either need to burn it to a DVD using your existing DVD burning tools or you will have a USB key with Windows 11. To install Windows 11, you will need to restart your PC with the DVD or USB key installed. If everything goes according to plan, your PC should start installing Windows 11 automatically.

Otherwise, you will need to follow the instructions to enter your PC’s BIOS or UEFI settings into your preboot environment. Consult your PC documentation at how to They do this. You must treat an ISO file as if it were some weird, random USB key you chose up off the street though – if you haven’t downloaded from Microsoft, be careful. Microsoft’s installation page provides instructions for verifying the “hash” or ISO identity at the bottom of the page. If you downloaded the ISO itself, it should be fine; hash checking is for paranoids only.
