Evolving telecommunications dominance requires open standards and industry agreements to enable communication service providers (CSPs) to maximize commercial opportunities. Business technology journalist Antony Savvas looks at key developments that help move things forward.
The Linux Foundation Europe, part of the Global Open Source Linux Foundation launched in September this year, has launched its first project to target the upstart telecom his edge head-on.

The Sylva project is designed to create a new “production quality” open source telco cloud stack. Its common cloud software frameworks and reference implementations aim to “reduce” fragmentation of the cloud infrastructure layer for telecommunications and edge services.
Born out of a desire to reduce complexity, accelerate the “cloudification” of networks, and meet the privacy, security and energy efficiency requirements of the European region, five European-based telecommunications companies have joined the project.
Telefonica, Telecom Italia, Orange, Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom have also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the Sylva project, joining telecommunications infrastructure providers Ericsson and Nokia.
They all agreed to address the “challenges” associated with telecom and edge use cases in Europe and beyond. Linux Foundation Europe says:
Target
Sylva’s specific goals include releasing a cloud software framework to prioritize requirements, developing solutions that integrate with existing open source components, and creating production-quality solutions that can be deployed in commercial products. will be Sylva will also develop a reference implementation of this cloud software framework and create an integration and validation program to accelerate adoption of network functions in the cloud. Arpit Joshipura, General Manager of Network, Edge and IoT at The Linux Foundation said.
