How to Back­up Data on Blu-ray Discs – Guide

For the purposes of this tutorial, I will backup my photos from my Windows 10 PC to a Blu-ray disc. That way, if something happens to my storage drive, I’ll always have copies of my photos. A standard Blu-ray Disc may contain up to 25GB of data, therefore, it is a viable backup medium for home to use. They’re also cheap and robust, which helps make backups.

If your PC has a Blu-ray burner, you’re set. You will also need some recordable (or rewritable) Blue-ray discs for this to work. They are called Blu-ray disc writable (BD-R) or Blu-ray writable erasable (BD-RE). Writable ​​can be recorded in one time, while Erasable can be reused. Either will work.

Finally, you’ll need Blue-ray recording software to do the heavy lifting. There are some programs capable of this. They include Express Burn CD and DVD Burner Free, Burnaware, Leawo Blu-ray Copy, Wondershare DVD Creator and others. I will be using Express Burn CD and DVD Burner Free as it is available from the Windows Store and it is free.

Gather all files you want to restore up in a single file or folder. Compress, if necessary, into a single file.

Download and install Express Burn CD and DVD Burner Free or the program of your choice.

Open the software and select the type of disc you want to create. I chose Data Disk for my image backup.

Set your Blu-ray drive as destination.

Set the file you want to restore up as the source.

Select Write data to Blu-ray in the lower right corner when you’re done.

The software will compile and burn the disc. You will hear the usual noises from the optical drive and see a progress bar within the program. Once complete, the drive will eject the disc. Remove the disk and label it clearly so you know what’s on it. Then store it in a safe place. It’s no use having a backup next to your computer as it can be damaged.

USB 3.0 makes this drive even more viable as a backup option. You don’t need any software and you can simply drag and drop files and folders onto it after formatting.

Cloud storage is also a very viable backup method. OneDrive is not very good and is prone to crash up but it’s free and it’s included with Windows. Google Drive is also free and has a nice sync app that you can install on your computer to keep your files up Until the present date. I use Google Sync for work and it comes back up my job drives every ten minutes. As I have 15GB of free storage, space isn’t an issue either.

Cloud storage isn’t as practical if you’re on a limited connection or using mobile Dice. Otherwise, it can be integrated into your computer and back up your stuff without you even knowing it.
