How to customize your theme on Windows 11 – Guide
Various themes are always available in Windows, but in Windows 10 these themes have become non-progressive and conventional in what they allow users to change. The title bar changes color to match the wallpaper, but little else happens.
Windows 11 comes with a much more customizable theme feature. You start with four pre-specified themes, although users are free to customize different aspects of them.
How to change a theme or customize one on Windows 11
To start using themes in Windows 11, you first need to open the Settings app and visit the “Personalization” section. To get there quickly, right-click on the desktop and select “Custom”.
When Windows Settings opens, you will automatically be in the “Personalization” section. Here, you can quickly switch to a theme by clicking a thumbnail in the “Click a theme to apply” section near the top of the window.
This is a great way to quickly switch between a bright mode theme (with a light background and light windows) and a dark mode theme (with dark colors), for example.
If you want to save a custom theme, see all your available themes or get new themes, scroll down to Settings > Personalization and click on “Themes”.
In Windows 11, a custom theme is a combination of your customization settings for desktop background, accent color, light or dark mode, mouse cursor style, and sound scheme. You can set them individually in different sections of Settings and Control Panel, but Windows provides quick links to each at the top of the Customization > Themes page. To use them, just click on “Background”, “Color”, “Sounds” or “Mouse Cursor” near the top of the window. Each link will take you to the appropriate page in Settings or Control Panel where you can set these options.
If you previously configured a custom desktop background in Windows Settings or modified your sound scheme, highlight color, or mouse cursor style, you will have the option to save your personalization settings as a custom theme in Personalization > Themes. To do this, click on the “Save” button button located just below the summary area.
After clicking “Save”, Windows will ask you to name the theme in a pop-up window. Enter the name and click “Save.” After that, your custom theme will appear in the list of themes in the section below.
Speaking of which, expand the “Current Theme” menu (if it’s not already open) by clicking on it. Below that, you’ll see thumbnails of each available theme arranged in a grid. In each thumbnail, you’ll see a preview of the theme’s desktop image, highlight color, and window color (dark or light). To change themes, click on any of the thumbnails and the theme will change automatically.
To install new themes from Microsoft Store, click “Browse Themes” button located below the theme thumbnails section.
The Microsoft Store app will open in the “Themes” section. Navigate to any topic that interests you. Many of them are available for free. If you want to download a free theme for your PC, click on the “Free” button button located under the theme name.
